Plea to set up regulatory authority for hospitals
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 22
The Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has asked the government to set up a Hospital Regulatory Authority (HRA) to control the high cost of treatment for treating diseases, especially of the heart. Speaking to mediapersons here today, the DMA President, Dr S.C.L. Gupta, said during the past 10 years more and more hospitals had come up in the private sector in the city and the cost of the Cath Labs and other equipment has come down substantially, but the benefit had not reached patients as the profits had been usurped by the bigger hospitals. He said, “We want an HRA having representatives from the government, hospitals, NGOs, media and public to control the price of healthcare treatment so that it is affordable even to the poorest sections of society.

The government could frame an appropriate legislation to constitute such a regulatory authority”. Dr Gupta added, “The irrational use of drugs, consumables, disposables and even investigations are probably responsible for this. We do not work in a planned way, that is why we do not have protocols for management and treatment of various critical heart diseases starting from the basic management of hypertension to congestive heart failure”.

The DMA President expressed concern over the high inflation in the heart care area. He pointed out, “We should immediately build up guidelines and protocols of various treatment modules, through our scientific deliberations and disseminate it properly amongst the general practitioners and cardiologists who should understand and start using it properly”. The DMA is organising a mega cardiology conference on October 27 where more than 400 delegates from the city would deliberate on latest scientific topics. The conference will also stress on the importance of popularising medical insurance in the country in view of the increasing treatment cost

Kids learn the grammar of cricket
Our Sports Reporter

Rohtak, October 22
Gone are the days when kids used to copy Lord Rama with bows and arrows in their hands before Dasehra every year. With the change of time, bat and ball have replaced the bows and arrows.

The TV screen has taken the place of the Ram Lila stage. Youngsters prefer to watch and discuss the deeds of Sachin Tendulkar instead of Lord Rama.

This was the impression one got on a visit to the local I.B. School which was the venue of a cricket coaching camp organised by the school during Dasehra holidays. The camp lasted 10 days and students from classes 3 to 9 learnt the grammar of cricket. According to the organisers, the camp was organised to rectify the basic faults in the technique of cricket learners. Special emphasis was laid on bowling, batting, fielding and physical care of the players. The camp was inaugurated by the coach of Haryana Ranji team and former Haryana Ranji cricketer Ashwani Kumar. Mrs Kamla Rathee, Chairman of the school, delivered the closing session address.

Expressing satisfaction at the camp activities, she stressed the need for organising such camps for junior cricketers.

She assured that such camps would continue to be held in the future.

Karthikeyan races to fifth place
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 22
Narain Karthikeyan, India's Tata RC Motorsport driver, showed courage and character in making a successful return to the cockpit from illness, when he finished fifth in the Valencia leg of the Telefonica World Series on Sunday.

Karthikeyan, who was forced to withdraw from last month's Barcelona leg, because of illness, was fifth past the chequered flag in the opening race, finishing in the points once again. It was one of his best performances of the season, second only to his third place podium finish at the Jarama event in June.

This capped off a good week end overall. In Friday's practice, Karthikeyan finished only 0.10 of a second behind 2001 Formula 3000 champion Justin Wilson. In the following day's qualifying for the first place, Karthikeyan managed eighth on the grid, in a tight fight for the top starting positions.

Karthikeyan made a blinding start to Race One, overtaking two drivers into the first corner. He edged his way to fifth and had former Formula I test driver for Prost, Jonathan Cochet, in his sights. The race was won by former FI driver Ricardo Zonta.

Karthikeyan now races at Buenos Aires in Argentina on November 24.
