Checking post-partum haemorrhage
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 22
Rajwinder (30) was brought to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) from Khanna as she was bleeding profusely following post delivery haemorrhage. She had delivered a baby through a caesarean section few hours earlier at a private nursing home in Khanna and thereafter there had been excessive bleeding that had put her life at risk. After trying their best to control the haemorrhage and failing to do so, her doctor referred her to CMC.

Dr Rajeev Kapoor, Deputy Medical Superintendent, CMCH said Rajwinder had lost a lot of blood and was immediately taken for surgery by a team of doctors lead by Dr Mary Abraham, Reader Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CMCH.

Dr Mary Abraham said, “Usually this kind of life-threatening haemorrhage leads to major surgical procedures or hysterectomy (removal for uterus) for saving the patient but we applied an innovative technique - ‘BLynch Suturing Technique’ (brace suture) to control the bleeding. The technique is particularly useful because of its simplicity of application, life saving potential, relative safety and its capacity of preserving the uterus and its hormonal functioning.”

Post-partum haemorrhage is a serious obstetric problem and is one of the major causes of maternal deaths in India. Five per cent of normal deliveries may lead to post-partum haemorrhage with a lot of blood loss. The morbidity and mortality rise only with delay in diagnosis and also due to right treatment modality. Surgical methods vary depending on the site of bleeding, the severity of condition and the cardiovascular stability of the patient.

Dr Mary further added, “B-Lynch brace suturing technique has been successfully applied with no problems to date and no apparent complications.” She said cost effectiveness of the procedure was another important factor that may encourage developing countries to consider its application. Its invention has proved invaluable in the control of massive post-partum haemorrhage as an alternative to more complicated surgery including hysterectomy that results in greater morbidity, delayed recovery and psychological suffering due to loss of fertility.
