6 fresh dengue cases

Six fresh cases of suspected dengue fever were admitted to the General Hospital and the Mani Majra Civil Hospital, today.

A total of 103 patients were examined at the OPD at Mani Majra hospital, out of which five with low platelet count were admitted. Two patients, including an old case, were referred to the General Hospital, as their platelet count fell below 50,000.

With this the total number of admissions at the Mani Majra, Civil Hospital has gone up to 26, while the number at General Hospital, Sector 16, is 34.

Meanwhile the UT Health authorities continued their efforts to check the spread of dengue fever at the preventive and curative level. The spray teams of the department continued their work in the Mani Majra, Bapu Dham and Daria village.

PANCHKULA: No fresh case of suspected dengue fever has been reported here today. The Deputy Commissioner said the administration had already carried out survey to measure density of mosquito and side-by-side fogging and spray of medicine for larva prevention are being done.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr B.S. Chaudhary, said generally the dengue fever spreaded in September and October . He said water should not be allowed to stand for a long time in coolers, water tanks, tyres, pitchers.

Ortho dept inaugurated at Sohana hospital

SAS Nagar, October 22
A new state-of-the art orthopaedic department (Ortho-Nova Advance Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics) was inaugurated by Ms Seema Jain, Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, in the Kanhaya block of Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Hospital at Sohana, near here, today.

She said in an era of consumerism in the medical field and rise of corporate hospitals, the Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib (C) Hospital Trust was offering quality medical care and treatment free of cost to the poor. This was being done with the help of philanthropic individuals and organisations as well as those who could afford to pay for the medical treatment.

Ms Jain asked the hospital authorities to adopt a few villages and take care of some projects of the government. She also urged the NGOs to come forward to help those living below the poverty line.

The hospital provides 24 hours emergency services. It has the latest high-tech equipment like C-ARM, lithotripsy, laproscopic surgical instruments.

Demango, Surinder fastest

Demango of SAI, STC, Sector 18, among girls section and Surinder of Government High School, Karsan, secured first place in the 100 metres in the Chandigarh State Athletic Championship which began here today at Sports Complex, Sector 46.

Other winners in below-16 age group were: 400 metres — Inder mohan; 800 metres and 2000 metres — Honey; and shot put — Bhindinder. In boys under-18 section, the winners were, Kuldeep in 100 metres, Rajneesh in 400 metres, Joginder in 800 metres and Harinder Singh in shot put. The boys below-20 section, the winners were: Manoj Kumar in 100 metres and 400 metres, Gurmeet-800 metres and 5000 metres and Kanwal Smarat in shot put.

In the boys below-22 section, the winners were: Jatinderbir Singh in 100 metres, Sunil Yadav in 800 metres and Jagdeep Singh in shot put. In men’s section, the winners were, Joginder Singh in 400 metres, Bhajan Singh in 800 metres, Mohinder Singh in 5000 metres and Raj Karan Singh in shot put.

In girls section, for below-16 section, the winners were, Demango in 100 metres and 400 metres, Nasima in 800 metres, Reena in 2000 metres, Rajbir in shot put and Deepika in high jump. In below-16 section, the winners were: Pawandeep Kaur in 100 metres, shot put and high Jump and Amanjot in 400 metres and 800 metres. The below-20 girls section winners were: Manju Hooda in 400 metres and 800 metres and Harpreet Kaur in shot put. Jagdeep Bawa also bagged the below-22 year shot put event.

SPS-44 win

Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, blasted St John’s High School, Sector 26, 3-0 in the CBSE Cluster XI Football tournament for under-16 boys played here today.

Sanjay school boys dominated the game right from the beginning. The first goal was scored in fifth minute by Sushil Kumar while second goal was struck by Sahib Singh in the 11th minute. Third goal was scored in the 25th minute. Mr Y.R. Sachdeva, Regional Secretary, CBSE, was the chief guest and distributed the prizes.

MCM girls retain title

MCM DAV College For Women, Sector 36, retained the title for the third time in a row in the Chandigarh State Women football meet when they won all the four matches they played on league basis. They topped the table by securing 12 points. Panjab University campus got the second place. Hosts Deepak Kapania Club bagged third place. Later, the Chandigarh Football Association honoured Bikramjit Singh, a class X student of St John’s High School, Sector 26, who represented Indian schools football team in the Asian Schools Football Championship held at Singapore in August. Bikramjit was also the youngest member of the team.

Cricket meet

Little Flower School, Panchkula, and Chandigarh Baptist School scored wins over Edmund Rice Cricket XI by 14 runs and six wickets, respectively, in the below-10 and 16 sections of the Vth Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament played here at St John’s High School, Sector 26.

Selection trials

The Panchkula District Cricket Association will hold the selection trials to select the Panchkula team on October 23 at 3 pm at Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula. According to Mr Sandeep Moudgil, secretary of the association told that players born on or after October 1,1977, are eligible to take part in the trials. Panchkula will play their first tie against Chandigarh on October 25.

Maa Saraswati Club win

Maa Saraswati Cricket Club defeated Hellience Cricket Club by 148 runs while Palsora Cricket Club outplayed GMC Cricket Club by 130 runs in the Haryana Civil Secretariat Cricket Tournament played here today at Sector 5 grounds, Panchkula.

70-year-old ‘young’ athlete

Rachhpal Singh Batth, at 70, is still going strong.
This was evident from the fact that this ‘young’ athlete, a native of Rurki khas village in Hoshiarpur district, took part in the London Marathon race held on April 14 this year where 32,889 marathon runners from entire world participated.

Rachhpal, who shifted to Britain a few years back, was here in the city to meet his friends. He said that very few lucky persons got the lifetime experience of participating in the above marathon. He said the unique part of this marathon was that, it involved persons from every age group.

Rachhpal completed this marathon of 26 miles and 385 yards in five hours, 14 minutes and 51 seconds. He said in the ‘Flora London Marathon’, he was able to raise donation worth £ 1000 for the Marie Curie Cancer Cure centre based in London, which gave him a lot of contentment.

Rachhpal said he had earlier also taken part in various marathons like Run Marathon, Delhi twice. His other previous achievements included representing Punjab in the National Veteran Athletic championship where he won gold as well as silver medals.

Rachhpal said that it was one’s own will power which enabled one to do whatever one aspired for. He said like he was able to reach Manali on bicycle from Chandigarh in three days. In 1995, he rode to Hemkunt Sahib on bicycle and completed the return journey in 12 days from Chandigarh. In 1960, he went to the Amarnath Cave as a trekker. Rachhpal is still going great guns in the field of athletics and claim his children are the real inspiring force for him at this age.

Dr Chadha’s tips to Army personnel

Dr Ravinder Chadha, former physio-therapist of the Indian cricket team, who delivered a lecture on ‘Fitness for the defence personnel’ about a month back, is these days giving a training stint to the instructor looking after the gym in Chandi Mandir. A schedule has been chalked out in regard to warm-up, stretching exercise for both the upper and lower limbs by giving demonstrations in Health Club of the Chandigarh Golf Club.

The Army Inspector was interested to know about the strengthening programme — how much weight is to be lifted. A schedule was set for different categories of Army personnel who wanted to improve their endurance and speed. According to Dr Chadha the maximum weight is selected with which only one repetition can be completed. For Army officers who want to improve their endurance 25-50% of the maximum weight lifted with 15-20 repetitions for 3-5 sets is sufficient. Army personnel who are interested in improving the speed, can work up to 50-70 of the maximum weight lifted with 6-10 repetitions and 4-6 sets.

Practical demonstration was also given with Dumbbell and free weights for improving the strength of the biceps’ triceps, shoulder muscles, muscle of the chest etc. Strengthening of the lower limb muscles with leg curls and leg extension was also shown. Dr Chadha cautioned that strength training exercise should not be done when a person is suffering from respiratory tract infection, heart and lung diseases, fever due to infection, viral etc. He said utmost care should be taken for undertaking strength exercises for the patient who have undergone by-pass surgery, coronary angioplasty etc.

In the end, proper way to do the abdominal and back exercises were advised.
