MTNL Health Mela opens
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 18
A 10-day-long health mela was inaugurated in the Capital today by the Union Minister, Mr Vijay Goel. Speaking at the function, the minister expressed concern over the growing incidence of various diseases and health disorders and urged the medical fraternity to devise innovative and cost-effective strategy to contain the spread of such ailments with a view to having a disease-free society. Mr Goel called upon medicos to check the increasing commercialisation of medical services and complex and costly diagnostic and surgical procedures, which have the effect of making the best of medical care out of the reach of common people, specially on account of the cost factor.

A major focus in the mela is on lifestyle interventions and preventive health care highlighting the need for regular check-up, health awareness and health education. The mela is being organised by MTNL, the Heart Care Foundation of India and the NDMC in collaboration with various departments of the Delhi Government and NGOs.

The Delhi Food and Supplies Minister, Mr Haroon Yusuf, while presiding over the inaugural function pointed out that therapeutic and curative approach to most health problems did not offer a lasting solution. He said the approach lay in primary prevention with an awareness campaign like the current health mela. He added that the Delhi Government had launched a lifestyle disease control programme with a special emphasis on containing heart diseases and diabetes.

Under the Bhagidari scheme the government had decided to invite NGOs in conducting school health education programmes. These include polio, cataract, free Delhi and AIDS control programmes. The mela will continue till the 27th of this month in the Talkatora Ground.
