Workshop on cotton-based production system

Ludhiana, October 18
The Department of Plant Breeding, PAU, will hold a two-day workshop on ‘Cotton-based production system’ from October 23, under the National Agricultural Technology Project.

According to Dr V.K. Saxena, Head of the department, the workshop would be inaugurated by Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, on October 23. Dr B.L. Chopra and Dr A.S. Brar, organisers of the workshop, said that the scientists and administrators concerned with research and development of American cotton from the National Agricultural Technology Project, World Bank, and the ICAR would take part in this workshop.

Sandeep judged best cadet

Doraha, October 18
Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a student of Guru Nanak National College, here, was declared the camp senior, best cadet and best firer in an NCC camp organised by 19 Punjab Battalion at 814 CETC yesterday.

Lieut Col. Hari Gurang, Commanding Officer of 19 Punjab Battalion, conferred this honour on the senior under officer Sandeep Kumar Sharma for his best performance during the 10-day camp organised by the battalion. Cadet Sunny Bhardwaj was given the rank of quarter-master.

In drill competitions under officer Balwinder Singh of GNN College, Doraha, showed excellent performance. In individual drill competition, a total of five cadets were chosen for D-CAT (Director Combined Annual Training Camp) out of which three cadets were of G N N College, Doraha, senior under officer Sandeep Kumar Sharma, cadet Sunny Bhardwaj and cadet Maninder Singh under officer Balwinder Singh Raju and corporal Kulwant Chand showed their talent in a bhangra-competition arranged in the camp.

A total of 20 schools and colleges participated in the camp.

Students display skills at exhibition

Ludhiana, October 18
Amidst the lush green surroundings and flower beds, students of six-month courses run by the Government Institute of Textile Chemistry and Knitting Technology, Rishi Nagar, held an exhibition of their products here today.

The students of the Textile Designing course presented products like colourful ladies’ suits and bed covers in tie and dye patterns. They also displayed their skills in batik work, screen , spray painting and hand painting.

“The Institute is a community polytechnique started with the aim of teaching vocational skills to students of the economically weaker sections of society to enable them to become either entrepreneurs or be gainfully employed,” said the Principal of the institute.

The students of the Beauty Culture course had drawn intricate designs on papers and displayed various henna applications. These girl students could work in beauty parlours. They had also learnt other things like facials and making fancy ‘vanity boxes’.

The students of the House Wiring courses had prepared a workable model of a water filter using two buckets costing as less as Rs 250, besides models of motor winding and mosquito killer. The students of Information Technology course displayed computers. While Ms Amarjit Kaur was the chief guest, Ms Manmeet Sodhia was the judge on the occasion.

Fazilka paddlers excel on first day

Paddlers from Fazilka and Barnala were at the centrestage on the first day of the Sixth CBSE Cluster XII Table Tennis Championship being organised by the Alpine International Senior Secondary School at its Raja Gardens, Ferozepore Road branch, here yesterday.

In the team championship (boys u-16), Army School, Fazilka, began their campaign on strong foot by drubbing BCM Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, 3-0 while Baba Ganda Singh Public School, Barnala, defeated MGN Public School, Kapurthala, 3-1 and then got the better of Army School, Fazilka, 3-2 to register their second consecutive victory.

In other matches, Shiv Jyoti Public School, Jalandhar, blanked T P S Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, 3-0, Dayanand Public School, Nabha, beat Guru Nanak International Public School, Ludhiana, 3-1 and D N M Senior Secondary School, Moga, lost to Green Land Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, 0-3 while J & K Public School, Jammu beat Guru Teg Bahadur Public School, Dhuri, 3-0 and Shiv Jyoti Public School, Jalandhar, defeated Ajanta Public School, Amritsar, 3-0.

In the girls section (u-16), Guru Harkrishan Public School, Amritsar, beat BBM DAV School, Talwara, 3-0, LSDRA SVM Senior Secondary School, Fazilka, beat S Teja Singh Kandhari School, Patiala, 3-0 while in the u-14 group, Shiv Jyoti Public School, Jalandhar, beat DAV School, Amritsar, 3-0 and Bhawans S L Public School, Amritsar, beat Alpine International Public School, Ludhiana, 3-2.

Earlier, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Ludhiana, inaugurated the championship in which more than 200 boys and girls from different CBSE schools of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir are taking part.

Badminton meet

A keen tussle is on the cards when some of the best shuttlers of Punjab will vie for top honours during the Punjab State Sub-junior Badminton Championship which begins at the Shastri Badminton Hall of Guru Nanak Stadium here.

During this four-day meet, to be conducted by the Ludhiana District Badminton Association under the aegis of Punjab Badminton Association from October 18 to 21, competition will be held in the boys as well as girls sections in three age groups — u-10, u-13 and u-16 years, respectively.

Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Ludhiana will inaugurate this meet in which more than 150 players are expected to take part.

Punjab teams for the forthcoming mini nationals, slated to be held at Patna from December 1 to 7, will be selected on the basis of their performance during this championship.

Title for Arun

Arun Dhand, former World Masters’ singles title holder (badminton) has added another feather in his cap by winning doubles title in the championship held at Melbourne in Australia last week. Arun had earlier annexed the title during the US Seniors Championship in the 35-plus category in 1995 and again won the trophy in the 5th Australian Masters Games in the same age group.

In the recently held games, in the 40-plus category, Arun in association with Misbun Sidek of Malaysia gave an outstanding performance to outclass the Chinese pair of Zheng Yang (former All-England champion) and Yuen Jro to lift the doubles title. Arun, who returned on Tuesday felt delighted when he informed that he paired with the former world no. 2 player, Misbun to clinch the veteran’s title.

Earlier, on their way to the finals, Arun and Misbun’s duo outplayed Perara Mark and Peterson Glenn of Australia to secure their berth in the final.
