SAIL cruise into NN Mohan Cricket semis

New Delhi, October 9
Steel Authority of India Ltd.(SAIL) beat Indian Air Force by four wickets to enter the semi-final of the Padmashri N N Mohan Memorial All-India Cricket Tournament at the Mohan Meakins Stadium, Ghaziabad.

A crackling knock of 72 by Sumit Dogra was the highlight of SAIL’s convincing victory. He was presented the man of the

match award by former Indian Test player Madan Lal, who is also the organising secretary of the Mohan Cricket Tournament.

In the semi-final, SAIL will clash against the winners of the match between Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) and Viraj Sports, Faridabad, on Thursday.

SAIL won the toss and put the Airmen into bat. Despite a strokeful knock of 74 by Mohd. Imtiyaz, Indian Air Force could make only 209 as the SAIL bowlers kept a steady line and length to take wickets at regular intervals. In reply,

SAIL knocked up 211 for the loss of six wickets in 44 overs.

Tarun stars as Shastri Club enter final

Tarun Chaudhary blasted 72 runs off 69 balls with ten fours and two sixes to help Lal Bahadur Shastri Club beat Scindia Club India by seven wickets to enter the final of the second Shaheed Smriti Under-19 Cricket Tournament for the Rameshwar Trophy, organised by the North Delhi Cricketers’ Association, at the Ashok Vihar ground.

Shastri Club will take on S P Academy in the final to be played at the Teri Oval ground in Gurgaon tomorrow at 9 a m. Delhi and District Cricket Association sports secretary Sunil Dev will be the chief guest at the final.

Mr Parveen Jain, a member of the Sports Committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, gave away the man of the match award.

Scores: Scindia Club India: 188 for 7 wickets in 35 overs (Bhupiner Yadav 59 n o, 41b. 2x4, 3x6; Rajat Mathur 45, 52b, 7x4; Anish Suri 21, P P Singh 17, 1x4, 1x6; Parul Jain 16, 1x4; Parminder 12, Parvesh Chikara 2 for 24; Ashutosh Sharma 2 for 37, Maninder Singh 1 for 24).

Tarun and Ratan put on 115 runs for the second wicket for Shastri Club after they lost their first wicket with just 23 runs on the board.

Arjun Singh, Gaurav Ghei share lead

Arjun Singh and Gaurav Ghei shared the lead after the second round of the Royal Challenge Grand Prix Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club course.

They were tied at eight-under par 136. Arjun carded the best round of the day, a five-under 67, to catch up with Gaurav, who shot 69. They took a three-stroke lead over their nearest rival, Jumman. The first leg of the Royal Challenge Grand Prix carries a cash prize of Rs 8 lakh.

Over hundred professionals, including Jyoti Randhawa, Vijay Kumar, Digvijay Singh, Uttam Singh Mundy, Vivek

Bhandari, Indrajit Singh Bhalotia, Ali Sher and Shiv Prakash are participating in the four-day event.

Arjun Singh dropped his only shot of the day on the par-five second, where he pushed his tee shot into the right rough, and had to chip out. He then hit his third on the green, eventually two-putting for his solitary bogey.

However, he picked up a stroke on the difficult par-four sixth and the par-five eighth to make the run at two-under

par. He then birdied the 10th hole to go three-under for the day, and made birdies on both the par fives coming in at the 14th and 18th holes to card 67.

Gaurav Ghei, who carded 67 on Tuesday, maintained his good form to card a three-under 69 this morning. Overnight

leader Jumman carded 73, to drop to third place at five-under after his creditable 67. Vinod Kumar, Ashok

Kumar and Amritinder Singh were a stroke behind at 140, four-under par. Veteran Shiv Prakash, who carded 69 overnight, shot a level par 72, to tie with Uttam Singh Mundy at three under-par, 141.

Gaurav Chabra hits century for Salwan Boys

Delhi Under-16 player Gaurav Chabra slammed his second successive century for Salwan Boys as the defending champions beat Don Bosco School by 132 runs and entered the quarter-final of the third Parle Cup Inter-School (Under-17) Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground. In another match, St Mark’s School, Meera Bagh, defeated Bosco Public School by three wickets.

Scores: Salwan Boys: 246 for 4 in 40 overs (Gaurav Chabra 132, Gaurav Sharma 66, Rameez Niyamt 2 for 45).

Don Bosco School: 114 all out in 34.1 overs (Naman Khanna 49 n o, Narender Singh 4 for 18). Bosco Public School: 115 all out in 34.1 overs (Akash Kumar 44, Subodh Kumar 27, Kunal Narang 3 for 25, Nikhil Mahajan 2 for 29, Sumit Silwal 2 for 18). St Mark’s School: 116 for 7 in 32.2 overs (Vaibhav Khatree Bala 40, Prateek Kumar 2 for 19).

Jaspreet Singh shines: A devastating bowling performance by Jaspreet Singh Bhatia, who claimed eight wickets for 23 runs, and a fine half century by Sachin Dhaka (59, 8x4) enabled Maharaja Ranjit Ji Academy to beat Environment Forest Ministry by four wickets and enter the quarter-final of the Prem Raj Trophy Cricket Tournament at the Guru Harkishan Public School ground. Jaspreet Singh was given the man of the match award.

Scores: Environment Forest: 189 all out in 38.4 overs (Rakesh Kumar 37, Ratan Lal 49, Mohan 28, Jaspreet Singh 8 for 23). Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji Academy: 190 for 5 in 30 overs (Sachin Dhaka 59, Ravinder 30, Dinesh 25, Vinay Rawat 3 for 23, Naveen 2 for 22).

LIC carrom titles: Mohd. Irfan beat Sanjay Verma 25-7, 25-7 to lift the men’s singles title of the 23rd Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) Carrom Tournament. Irfan performed a “white slam” on way to the title. Bharti Narayan beat Parvesh Thakur 25-0, 25-23 to bag the women’s singles title. Mohd. Irfan, Sanjay Verma, Rajiv Prakash and D K Baudh will represent the North Zone Men’s team in the 23rd All-India Carrom Tournament to be held in Bhopal. The women’s team comprises Bharti Narayan, Parvesh Thakur and Sneh Lata (all Delhi) and Bhanu Jain (Chandigarh).

Young Boys, Uttrakhand earn full points

New Delhi, October 9
Young Boys trounced Union Football Club 5-0 and Uttrakhand Club beat Shastri Club 1-0 in the warm-up tournament being conducted for the Delhi Soccer Association A and B Division clubs by the Delhi Veterans Football Club at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

The highlight of Young Boys’ victory was a three-in-a-row feat by nippy striker Gaingamlung, who struck the second, third and fourth goals in the first half. Inside-left Nicolas Palmei had opened Boys’ account off a pass from Arif Akhtar Ansari in the 15th minute while mid-fielder Jimthailung Kabui completed the tally in the 50th minute.
