PCCTU puts off October 10 rally
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 9
The statewide rally that was to be organised by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) on October 10 at Patiala has been postponed till November 8.

The PCCTU has also postponed its general house meeting scheduled to be held on October at GGN Khalsa College for Boys till November17.

The teachers had planned a total education bandh in all 172 non- govt colleges all over Punjab and Chandigarh on October 10 in Patiala, to show their resentment against the new education policy adopted by the Congress Government. The teachers had also decided to take mass leave that day.

The PCCTU took this decision after a meeting with the Education Minister, Mr Khushal Bahl, at Chandigarh. Prof Kanwaljit Singh president of the PCCTU, said the minister had listened to their problems sympathetically and assured them that he would arrange their meeting with Capt Amarinder Singh on October10.

Keeping the positive response, the teachers received from Mr Bahl, the PCCTU has decided to give govt a chance. The delegation that met Mr Bahl included state president, S.S. Hundal, general secretary, Balbir Singh, Prof. Amrinder Pal Singh and Prof V.K. Sharma.

Of many demands of the PCCTU, one major demand concerns their pension scheme that was passed by the Rajinder Kaur Bhattal government in 1996. The scheme was to be implemented through the government treasury with April1 1992 as the cut-off date. But the scheme never took off and the new government has come up with a new modified scheme.
