Seminar on knee replacement today

Ludhiana, October 7
A one-day seminar on ‘An update on total knee replacement’ will be organised by the Department of Orthopaedic, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) tomorrow under the supervision of Dr J.L. Bassi (Chief Patron).

According to a press release, Prof Dr K. Samuelson (knee designer surgeon) of Salt Lake City, USA, will be chief guest. This seminar will be a boon for the patients of knee transplantation. On this occasion, a live surgery will be performed and Prof Dr K. Samuelson will also examine the patients. Dr Samuelson, Dr Yamin (DMCH) and Dr J. Rai of the PGI will deliver a lecture to the orthopaedic doctors in the evening.

Dr Samuelson has successfully performed over 5000 operations of knee transplantation at the USA, said Dr J.L. Bassi.

The Department of Orthopaedic, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, has been organising such seminars time to time to enhance the skills and knowledge of doctors by introducing new operation techniques.

TB detection camp organised

Ludhiana TB Eradication Society organised an awareness, health education and TB detection camp at Shree Ganesh Temple premises, Sector 32 PUDA Urban Estate today.

Dr Satish Nauria, president of the society, said in a press note today that the camp was inaugurated by Dr Neelam Bassi, District Family and Welfare Officer. Dr Bassi appreciated the efforts of the society in eradicating TB from the city.

A team of doctors, including Dr Satish Nauria, Dr Suresh Bhardwaj, Dr Ravi Singla, Dr Savita Nauria and Dr Sunita, examined the patients. Mr Deep Birla, the general secretary of the society, said the society was working hard to eradicate TB from this industrial city since June 1997.

Shanti Tara College to host volleyball championship

Shanti Tara College (co-education), Ahmedgarh, will host this year’s Punjabi University volleyball championship from October 9 to 11. The opening ceremony of the championship will be held at the college ground on the first day of the championship. Social worker Jagpal Singh Khangoora will preside over the opening ceremony while the president of the managing committee of the college, Mr Prem Gupta, will preside over the closing ceremony. Teams from various colleges affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala, will participate in the championship.

Wrestling meet: The wrestling team of Shanti Tara College, Ahmedgarh, has shown magnificent results in a Punjabi University competition. A silver medal has been won by Muneer Mohammad while Dharminderpal Singh has won a bronze medal.

Cricket tourney: Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) will organise PCA-Parle G inter school cricket tournament (under 17) from October 9 at Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar.

Disclosing this here today, the general secretary of the LDCA, Mr Vinod Chitkara, said four teams from S.D.P. Senior Secondary School, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, B.R.S. Nagar, the local Sargodha National Public School and Santan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School will participate in the tournament.

Meanwhile, trials for selecting the district senior cricket team for Katoch Shield Cricket Tournament will be held at the Arya College for Boys, Civil Lines, on October 9.

Basketball meet from Oct 9

Dr Harbans Lal, Minister of State for Forests, Food and Civil Supplies, will inaugurate state basketball competitions (under 14) in Government Senior Secondary School (Boys) here on October 9.

According to Mr Roshan Lal Sood, secretary of the tournament, the competitions will continue up to October 12. Three playgrounds of Arya School, Municipal ground and G.P.S. Public School have been selected. These will be managed by separate committees.

Mr Sood was here today to finalise arrangements for the stay of participants. Girls from districts of Moga, Bathinda, Patiala, Sangrur, Ropar, Jalandhar, Muktsar, Ludhiana, Ferozepore, Nawanshahr, Mansa, Gurdaspur and Faridkot will stay in Government Girl Senior Secondary School. Boys from districts of Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Senior Secondary School and those from districts of Moga, Hoshiarpur Sangrur, Faridkot, Kapurthala, Patiala, Ropar, Muktsar will stay in Arya Senior Secondary School here.

BVM School judokas bag 13 medals

Students of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School, Udham Singh Nagar, here, won 13 medlas, including two gold, five silver and six bronze, in the 16th Punjab State Inter-School Judo Championship organised by the Sarbhind Educational Society at the Sharda Sarbhitkari Vidya Mandir, Sector 40-D, from October 4 to 6.

According to Mr Baljeet Singh Gill, in charge (sports) Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School, the two gold-medal winners in the U-14 years category — are Nidhi Arora (below 33 kg) and Manjeet Kaur (below 38 kg).

The silver medal-winners in U-14 years category are — Parul Khanna (below 43 kg) and Shagun Bawa (below 40 kg). Tenika Arora (below 50 kg), Bharti (below 63 kg) and Surbhi (below 71 kg) are silver-medal winners in U-19 years category.

The six bronze medallists include: U-14 years — Taranjeet Kaur (below 20 kg) Vishwas Bawa (below 24 kg) Pallavi (below 28 kg) Mohit (below 24 kg); U-19 years category — Meenu Gupta (below 35 kg) and Meenu Arora (below 56 kg.

On the basis of their performance during the championship, Nidhi Arora and Manjeet Kaur have been selected for the North Zone Schools Judo Championship scheduled to be held in Delhi from November 8 to 11, Mr Gill informed.
