Training workshop

A four-day training workshop in disability prevention and rehabilitation for master trainers from Himachal Pradesh opened at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here today.

The first day was dedicated to general disabilities as well as “locomotor” disabilities. Prof Raj Bahadur, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Medical Superintendent, GMCH, gave an overview account of the disability process. He said disability existed in about 10 per cent of the world population. He emphasised that preventive and rehabilitative measures should be taken to prevent the impact of disability.

Football title for Sanjay Public School

Chandigarh, October 7
Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, trounced Guru Nanak Mission Public School, Paonta Sahib, 6-0 to lift the CBSE North Zone Cluster XI football title here today.

Star forward Ashwani of Sanjay Public School scored three goals in the 8th, 42nd, and 50th minutes. The half-time score was 1-0.

Mr Yog Raj Sachdeva, Regional Secretary, CBSE Chandigarh, who was the chief guest, gave away the trophies and certificates to the winners and runners-up teams.

DAV School win

DAV, School, Sector 8 defeated St. John’s School, Sector 26, by nine wickets in the PCA-Parle G School Tournament, which started here today.

St John’s School won the toss and elected to bar first but were bundled out for a meagre 97 runs in 32.2 overs. Only Amitage (15) and Chetanya (13) showed some grit to counter the DAV bowlers. Naresh, Karanveer and Gauravjit claimed three wicket each, for DAV School.

DAV School had no problem knocking off the required runs in 16 overs. They lost only the wicket of Vijay, who was adjudged lbw off Rajat’s bowling.

Brief score: St. John’s School: 97 all out in 32.2 overs. Amitage 15, Chetanya 13; Gauravjit 3 for 10, Amitage 15 and Chetanya 13; Naresh 3 for 11 and Karanbir 3 for 18.

DAV: 98 for 1 in 16 overs. (Harjit Singh 53 not out, Vishal Devraj 28 not out).

Cricket meet

Chandigarh Youth Cricket Club’s Rohin’s all-round effort (26 and 2 for 10) helped his team beat Youngsters Cricket Club, Panchkula, in the opening match of Vth Haryana Tourism Cash Prize Cricket Tournament being played at Sector 14, Panchkula.

Youngsters CC won the toss and opted to bat first. The team was bundled out for 110 runs in the allotted 25 overs. Vinod and Pardeep scored 25 and 16 runs, respectively.

Chandigarh Youth Cricket Club reached the target in 15 overs losing only five wickets. Somesh finished with 23 not out.

The second match of the day between Diamond XI, Panchkula, and Sagar XI, Chandigarh, was declared a tie.

Diamond XI won the toss and opted to bat first and scored 171 runs in their allotted 25 overs. Kaddi scored 51 while Sunny and Vishwa scored 27 and 23 runs, respectively.

Chasing the target, Sagar XI also made 171 runs in their allotted overs.

Brief scores: Youngsters Cricket Club: 110 in 25 overs (Vinod 25, Pardeep 16; Sanjeev 3 for 10, Robin 2 for 10, Sameer 2 for 16); Chandigarh Youth Cricket Club: 111 for 5 (Rohin 26, Somesh 23, Kamal 3 for 29).

Diamond XI: 171 in 25 overs (Kaddi 51, Sunny 27 not out, Vishwa 23; Bittu 3 for 17, Anwar 2 for 33); Sagar XI: 171 in 25 overs (Happy 38, Ashok 27, Randhir 2 for 14, Paritosh 2 for 29, Sunny 2 for 32).

Basketball trials

The trials to select probables for Chandigarh team which will take part in the 19th Youth National Basketball Championship to be held at Jalandhar from October 13 to 19 will be held on October 9 at New Public School, Sector 18, according to a press note of the Chandigarh Basketball Association.

Players born on or after January 1, 1986, will be eligible for the trials. The players must bring their birth certificates, signed by their school principals, the note said.

Selection trials

The selection trials to select the Chandigarh men and women basketball teams for the Ist All-India Satish Kaushal Memorial Basketball Tournament will be held on October 8 at 4 pm at the DAV Senior Secondary school, Sector 8. According to Mr KS Bharti, general secretary of the Chandigarh Basketball Association, the meet will be held at Sarkaghat (Mandi), HP, from October 12 to 14. Bharti said eight men and six women will be selected and they would be given free boarding and lodging by the hosts besides cash prizes to the winners.

Women pugilists excel

AMBALA: Women boxers from Ambala performed well in the Haryana state women’s sub-junior, junior and senior boxing championships.

The sub-junior team won three gold and four silver medals and stood third in the overall team championship. While the junior team won one gold and one silver medal, the senior team won the silver and one bronze medal.

Boxing coach Joginder Singh said in sub-junior team, the gold medal winners are Sangeeta, Poonam Sharma and Saroj Sharma while the silver medal winners are Reena, Geetanjali and Savita. In the junior team, Purnima Udiyan won a gold medal while Rajvinder Kaur won a silver medal. In senior team, Reena won a silver medal while Rekha won a bronze medal.

Two boxers from Ambala have been selected for the training camp to be held at Hisar. The selected boxers are Purnima Udiyan and Rajvinder Kaur.

Empowerment campaign ends

Presiding over the function, head of the northern zone B.K. Achal said that the woman was capable of transforming society by emerging her inner power.
