Dr Nagi gets ICMR award

Having defined a new technique of Girdlestone arthroplasty to give reasonable mobility to totally disabled poor patients who cannot afford replacement surgery, Dr O.N. Nagi, Head of the Orthopaedics Department at PGI, was today awarded ICMR’s Basanti Devi Amir Chand Award, given for outstanding merit in the field of bio-medical sciences.

The prestigious award, which was presented to Dr Nagi, in New Delhi today, has been given in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the development of joint replacement surgery for the year 2001.Since the inception of the award 50 years back, it is for the second time that a faculty member of the PGI has been honoured with the oldest ICMR award.

Having earned the distinction of being the only Indian to be selected as a “Test Surgeon” for new hip prosthesis using the latest PEEK technology being developed in Europe, his innovations have been included in teaching and training programme of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr Nagi, a post graduate of PGIMER and Oxford University, started working in the field of arthroplasty and standardised surgical techniques to make it more suitable for Indian patients. His innovation on Girdlestone arthroplasty has been included in standard texts of orthopaedics like Campbell’s Orthopaedic Surgery, Mercer’s Textbook and Rockwood and Green book of fractures, read throughout the world.

The ICMR established the Basanti Devi Amir Chand Award in 1953 to honour achievements of senior research worker for outstanding merit in the field of bio-medical sciences, including clinical research.

100 persons donate blood

Chandigarh, September 30
Over 100 persons donated blood at a camp organised at Confederation of Indian Industry today. The camp, according to a press note, was organised by the Rotary and Inner Wheel Club, besides the Rotaract Club, in association with the CII.

The donors included CII staff, Rotarians, besides members of Kamla Dials and Devices Limited, Drish Shoes, Hot Millions, Shivalik Poly-Pack, Uni-Royal and other voluntary organisations.

The intention behind holding the camp, as per the note, was to collect safe blood from volunteers. It added that the camp was organised annually by the Rotary Club of Chandigarh with PGI's Blood Bank Society.

Special Olympics matches from Oct 10

The Special Olympics North will hold badminton and table tennis matches of the National Games — 2002 in Chandigarh from October 10 to 12.

According to Ms Promila Chandra Mohan, adviser trustee of the organisation, the olympics torch will be received by Mr Pawan Bansal, local MP, at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, Sector 27, on October 10 at 9 am. The Adviser to the UT Administrator, Ms Neeru Nanda, will formally inaugurate the events at 11 am on the same day.

Basketball meet

New Public School, Sector 18, and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, surged ahead in the Fifth Rao Jai Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament, which began at New Public School, Sector 18, on Monday. NPS-18 beat Guru Harkishan Public School 50-20 with half-time score of 27-11, while DAVSSS-8 got the better of St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, by 54-40 with half-time score of 28-16. In other matches of the day, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, outplayed DC Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, Panchkula, 57-27 with half-time score of 35-12. In yet another match of the day, SD Public School, Sector 32, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, by 62-40 with half-time score of 35-19.

Mr N.C. PuriCoach retires

Mr N.C. Puri, Coordinator-cum-Chief Badminton Coach, Sports Authority of India, retired on Monday after putting in 35 years of service. Mr Puri was given a warm farewell by the Chandigarh SAI Coaches Association.

Tae kwon do champ

Govind Arora, a Class I student of Little Flower Convent School, Sector 14, Panchkula, bagged gold medal in the 11th Haryana State Tae kwon do Championship, which concluded at Karnal on Sunday. He won individual sparing below 24 kg for below 13 years under the category green belt to black stripe. Govind, a trainee of Mr Harish Kumar, has been selected by the Haryana Tae kwon do Association to represent state in the National Tae kwon do Championship to be held in New Delhi in December.

Cricket tournament

LG XI defeated Sports Promoters XI by 106 runs to move in the final of the LG League-cum-knockout Cricket Tournament played here on Monday. In other match of the day, Bedi Cricket Club beat Wee XI by 63 runs.

Inter-school tourney from Oct 16

Chandigarh, September 30
The UT Education Department (Schools) will organise an inter-school tournament in basketball, handball, kabaddi, football, hockey, volleyball, kho-kho, softball and cricket for the girl as well as boy students in under-14,17 and 19 categories.

The tournament will be held from October 16 to November 7, 2002.

The entries can be submitted to Mr Karan Singh, Secretary-cum-Principal, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, in case of boys and Ms R.Minhas, Secretary-cum-Principal, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, for girls.

The last date for the submission of entries is October 7, 2002. An official meeting for the tournament will be held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18 on October 8, said Mr Karan Singh, Secretary of the Inter-School Tournament Committee (Boys).

Employment exchange office shifted

The Office of the Regional Employment Exchange and State Apprenticeship Adviser, UT Chandigarh, has been shifted to the Old Consumer Court building, near Punjab State Agricultural Marketing Board, Bridge Market, Sector 17-C. Early the office was situated in the Additional Town Hall Building in Sector 17-C.

MC clerk’s suspension cleared

Suspension of Padam Kumar, a clerk with the Municipal Council, who was caught by the Vigilance Bureau while allegedly accepting a bribe along with two other employees, was one of the issues cleared at the general house meeting of the civic body here today.

The two other employees — S.K. Gulati, accountant, and Rajinder Singh, sanitary inspector — had already been suspended by the Department of Local Government, Punjab. Since the appointing authority of the clerk was the Municipal Council, the action had to be taken by it.

All 13 items on the agenda, except one which was kept pending, were cleared by the House. Most of them related to council employees. The item relating to the laying of water pipe lines in Matour village was also cleared.
