300 students take part in painting contest

Ludhiana, September 27
On the opening day of the three-day annual festival of Arya Samaj, around 300 students took part in the painting contest that was held at the local Baba Isher Singh Public School here this morning.

The winners of the contest, in which the students were required to paint pictures of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati and charts related to his teachings, were: Gurdip Singh, Simran Preet Kaur and Tejinder Kaur who got the first, second and third positions, respectively, in the junior section, while Kapil was given an appreciation award.

In the senior sections, the first three positions went to Supreet Kaur, Harleen Kaur and Tejinder Kaur, respectively. Appreciation award in the section was bagged by Gagandeep Kaur.

Mr Rajinder Kumar Dewan presided over the prize distribution function, which was also attended by the Principal, Ms Veena Sehgal, Ms Amarjit Kaur, Councillor, Pandit Satyapal Pathik, Mr Dev Pal Arya and Mr Roshan Lal Arya, president, Arya Samaj.

Earlier, the three-day festival got off to a start at the Arya Samaj temple in Dal Bazar with the holding of a yajna, the fire for which was lighted by Ms Urmila Virdi, Mr Umesh Virdi and Mr Surinder Kumar Malhotra and his wife. Pandit Surinder Kumar Shastri supervised the yajna proceedings. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Swami Shobhanand said the path of righteousness should be preferred to that of evil.

Another day of Talent Hunt-2002

Talent Hunt-2002 organised for postgraduate students of English, Commerce and Punjabi of G.G.N. Khalsa College evoked a lot of interest and response among students. Mr Jaswant Singh Gill, Principal, Guru Nanak College, Doraha, inaugurated the function.

The competition witnessed keen contests in choreography, songs, gazals, mono-acting, skits and poem recitation. The prizes were given by Mr Kuldeep Singh, Joint Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana. Gaurav, student of commerce, was declared Mr G.G.N. while Ms Kuljit Kaur was declared Ms G.G.N.Ritu and her party not only won the choreography contest but also parody choreography.

Koshish 2002 livens up college

The campus of the Punjab College of Technical Education has been a hubbub of activities since morning. Although, various contests, which were scheduled to be held at 9 a.m., had been delayed, yet the cheerfulness of the participants was infectious. Students participating in flower arrangement competition were busy giving captivating captions. Boys were found holding small bunches of flowers as participation in the competition would enable them to get two points.

“Sell It’, has been another very interesting competition where the students have to sell defunct things by their communication skills. Western solo and instrument solo gave a chance to students to display their talent. Performers of western group dance displayed a lot of agility in executing the steps. The function was inaugurated by Mr Tej Parkash Singh, Cabinet Minister for Transport.

Exhibition on life of Swami Dayanand

An exhibition of paintings, essays on the life and teachings of Swami Dayanand Ji was organised at Baba Isher Singh (Nanaksar) Senior Secondary School this morning. Students of middle and high school had prepared around 300 paintings.

The Principal of the school, Mrs Veena Sehgal, said through the works and quotations of Swami Dayanand, the students would imbibe positive values. She further said in the modern world where the values were deteriorating, the words of great leaders brought solace. Such exhibitions were essential to give impetus to moral and ethical values.

The following students won prizes: Gurpreet Singh (1), VI D, Simranjit Kaur (2),VIIB, Tejinder Kaur (3) VIC, Kapil VIIC. These students were from Section A whereas the students from IX and X belonged to section B. The students winning the prizes are as follows: Supreet Kaur (1), XD, Harleen Kaur (2), XB, Gurpreet Kaur, (3) IX C, and Gagandeep Kaur, (4), XC.

Babbar, Sudesh to perform in city today

The Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam, a voluntary organisation set up to promote cultural activities, will organise a cultural programme, An evening of ghazals, by Satish Babbar and Karakattam, a rare form of dance, by K. Sudesh on September 28. Satish Babbar is a singer, actor, composer and director. K. Sudesh’s performance is prominently covered by Discovery and National Geographic Channel.

Biased umpiring alleged

Participants in the ongoing Inter-Zonal Schools Cricket Tournament (u-14) being held here at Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar ground have alleged biased umpiring. In a complaint to the organising committee, it was alleged that in the match played on Wednesday between Gujjarwal zone and Gill zone, the umpires gave decisions that went in favour of Gill zone and cost Gujjarwal zone the match.

The participants have urged that umpiring should be done only by cricket coaches.
