The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh today passed an unprecedented unanimous resolution recommending to the Administrator to order an independent inquiry into the auction of a commercial property, transfer of the presiding auction officer Ashok Vashishth and seizure of records alleging ‘’hanky panky’’ in the auction.

Fake visa racket busted

A racket involving issuing of fake visas was today busted by the operation cell of the Chandigarh police. A 35-year-old resident of Army Flats in Mata Mansa Devi Complex, Harish Sharma, has been arrested in the case.

India develops cryogenic engine

India has developed an indigenous cryogenic engine. The country has also acquired the capability of taking .8-metre resolution pictures through satellites. This was disclosed here today by space scientist and Chairman of Prasar Bharati Prof U.R. Rao.

Better training of cops stressed
Chandigarh, September 27
Standardisation of procedures, better training of policemen and improvisation of existing facilities are some of the areas which the police organisations in the country have to concentrate on. The areas of concern are low priority to police training and fewer policemen per lakh of population than the prescribed international standards.

Traffic jam on Chd-Ambala highway

Traffic on the busy Chandigarh-Ambala highway was disrupted for over an three hours as a tractor-trailer carrying bricks blocked the bridge over the Ghaggar river in Bhankharpur village near here this afternoon.

Farmers create chaos
Chandigarh, September 27
Agitating farmers from different parts of Punjab, who have been camping on Jan Marg for the past one week, today brought vehicular traffic in the hub of the city to a standstill for more than five hours.

Saini cultural society splits

While the ruling faction of the Northern India Sainis Cultural Society has decided to hold the election of the President of the Society on September 29 as scheduled, the other faction has convened a general house meeting of the society on the same day and at the same venue.

Traders against hike in parking fee
Chandigarh, September 27
The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), the Traders Association, Sector 17 and the Samadhan yesterday opposed the reported proposals of parking contractors charging Rs 1000 for all parking lots in Sectors 17, 8 and 9. These organisations expressed dissatisfaction with the existing parking arrangements and condemned the Municipal Corporation and contractors for looking for opportunities to ‘’fleece the people.”

Plea for thekri pehra
Panchkula, September 27
The local police has asked residents to organise thekri pehra in their sectors from 12 midnight to 4 am to check burglaries. This idea was mooted by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Ms Bharti Arora at a meeting with representatives of various resident welfare associations here today.

Jewellery worth 1.5 lakh stolen
Chandigarh, September 27
Burglars broke into a locked house in Shivalik Enclave in Mani Majra here and decamped with Rs 20,000 and jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh. The theft was noticed when Mr Rohit, a nephew of the landlady, Mrs Mohni Ahuja, came to the house. According to information available, Mrs Ahuja was living in the house along with her daughter after the death of her husband.

Student found dead in rented room
Chandigarh, September 27
A 22-year-old student of Khalsa College died under mysterious circumstances in his rented accommodation in Sector 15 here this morning. The victim, Mebam Priparta Singh, hailing from Manipur, was a BA student in the Sector 26 Khalsa College.

PU undecided over poll dates
Chandigarh, September 27
The university is still undecided over the possible date of conduct of elections to the Panjab University Campus Students Council. A meeting of the authorities with student bodies was held today. One group wanted poll elections in the beginning of October after the autumn break while others were in favour of the poll in the third week of October.

1,200 participate in talent search competition
Chandigarh, September 27
About 1,200 students participated in 25 different competitions in the Open Talent Search Competition-2002 organised at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19-C, today. The competitions included kite making, decorate your vehicle, general quiz, on-the-spot painting and mehndi competition. The Director Public Instructions (Schools), UT, Mr D.S. Mangat, was the chief guest on the occasion.

‘Library life-long educational institution’

Lectures were organised on “Know your library” and importance of sociology in today’s world at Government College here today. Dr H.R. Chopra, Professor of Library and Information Institution, Panjab University, Chandigarh, said library was a life-long educational institution and by visiting libraries and increasing library hours, students could equip themselves with accurate and latest knowledge which could prove helpful while preparing for competitive exams.

Cultural bonanza by students

Notice on Ram Lal’s bail plea
Chandigarh, September 27
Acting on an anticipatory bail plea moved by Ram Lal in a case of cheating registered against him, a local court today issued a notice to the state to file a reply in the case. Ram Lal is presently in judicial custody along with other suspects, Surinder Sharma, Baldev, Narveer, for his alleged involvement in a separate rape case of a Shimla-based girl. 

HC directs SSP to intervene
Chandigarh, September 27
Taking serious view of a petition filed by a 76-year-old landlady alleging that she, along with her widow daughter-in-law and two children, were being harassed by the Chandigarh police at the behest of a tenant, Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police to personally look into the matter.

HC notice to Admn, MC on shifting dharna site
Chandigarh, September 27
Acting on a public interest litigation filed by a city advocate seeking directions for shifting the venue of rallies and dharnas from road dividing Sector 16 and 17 to some alternative site, besides maintaining the cleanliness of Rose Garden and Shanti Kunj in Sector 16, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion to the Chandigarh Administration, besides the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.

International workshop on lung cancer in PGI

Keeping in mind a rise in the number of lung cancer patients in northern India, the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, PGI, is organising an international workshop. Over 200 delegates, including doctors from France, England and Nepal, are expected to attend the workshop.

Skating facilities at St Stephen’s

City skaters will now have the opportunity to make use of the newly created skating facilities at the St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. With Mr Harold Carver, Principal of the school, announcing his plans to throw open skating facilities to the students and appointing renowned roller hockey coach Balwinder Singh, the sport is likely to gain momentum in the city.

Shivalik school win hockey title
Chandigarh, September 27
Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, won the Pre- Nehru (under-17) UT Inter-school Hockey Tournament played here today at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35. In the final, they blanked Sanjay Public school, Sector 44, by 4-0. The half time score was 1-0. Two goals were scored by Tejinder Pal and one each by Jatinder and Kanwalpreet.
