Students’ stir not over: DIET assn
Our Correspondent

Ahmedgarh, September 22
The District Institution of Education and Training (DIET) Students Welfare Association has denied the report regarding the postponement of their agitation till Wednesday after the assurance given by the Punjab Education Minister, Mr Khushal Behl.

Mr Birender Khatra, state president of the association, told Ludhiana Tribune that the association had only calmed down the agitation till Wednesday. Students will not attend classes and continue dharnas though peacefully , he said.

Elaborating on the issue, Mr Khatra said earlier the minister had accepted two demands of the students regarding the restoration of upper limit to 42 years for job and relaxation in percentage of marks from 55 per cent to 50 per cent. Instead of initiating the departmental procedure in this connection. With these demands the minister kept putting off the matter.

The students had gheraoed the minister at Amritsar on Saturday and he could only break their cordon after assuring them that he would take up their demands at the Cabinet meeting. Mr Khatra said, “If he is sincere why does he not order his officers to do the needful instead of ‘discussing the demands in Cabinet meeting.”

Teachers’ plea to government
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, September 22
Prof Jaipal Singh, president, Punjab Government College Teachers Association (PGCTA) has urged the Punjab Government to give sanction to the plan posts, without which hundreds of teachers working in Government Colleges at Naya Nangal, Fazilka, Mansa, Malerkotla, Ropar etc have not been paid salaries for the past three to four months.

He has also urged the Government to fill all vacant posts of lecturers and principals, due to which the students are the worst sufferers.

While welcoming the decision of Punjab Government to restart appointments on compassionate grounds, he cautioned about the role played by the financial managers, particularly the Finance Department.

Citing some examples of blindly rejecting or dilly-dallying of cases, he said the demands for relaxation of participation in refresher/orientation courses upto December 31, 2002, advance increments for Ph.D holders, implementation of UGC notification in toto were pending with the Finance Department whereas the Department for Higher Education had sent these with positive comments.

He warned the government of serious consequences, if this approach continued.

The competitive examinations should be done away with

MRS Manju Parkash, principal, in spite of fracturing the radial bone of her left wrist was smiling and attending to her duties. When her staff members came to ask her about her well being, she said smilingly,"It is good to have sufferings come your way once in a while for then only one appreciates better things of life."

On Religion

  • "I believe in karma. We should do our duties sincerely. For this reason I reach half an earlier than the school time to see that everything is in an apple -pie order. All my actions are guided by positive thoughts. I firmly believe we should have a humanitarian approach. We transfer the good 'sanskars' to the students in the Morning Assembly. We sing a song of 'thanks giving' to the Lord. Through group activities in the various Houses , the teachers talk about being a good human being. We organise 'declamation contests, debates' which make students ponder over good values. We have a secular approach. These days a lot of religious people are coming to the city. The parents who attend the discourses tend to influence their children with their religious likes and dislikes which is not good.

On Education

  • The present system of education is totally dependent on examinations which tests the memory power of students and not the real ability of the students. The whole education needs a complete overhauling. The present system causes too much stress on the students and parents. In this cut throat world, the students want to excel and go for tuitions straining their physical and their parents' financial resources. Where is the need of competitive exams for CET and PMT etc. Since the CBSE Board has uniformity in its course , why can't the students be admitted on the basis of the marks they get in Board Examination? Extra forms for competitive cost a lot of money and a lot of physical and mental effort on the part of the students. Failure leads to endless depression. — AA

POEMS BY STUDENTS
Stars

Stars are so bright but

It is so sad that they

shine only at night

Looking at stars

gives peace of mind

how many are they

is difficult to find

Touching the stars

is simple to say

they are bright

but far away

Jaspreet Kaur, VI-B

Best medicine is laughter

The best teacher is experience

The best student is attempt

The best book is life

The best lesson is patience

The best sport is duty

The best food is thought

The best dress is a smile

The best shelter is truth

The best relation is love

The best medicine is laughter

Bidu Maheshwari, X-C

Life is like a coin

Having sorrows and joys

Life is an ocean full of

Ups and downs

Life if like a flower

as flower blooms and dries

Human beings get born

Live and die

Alka Singal, XI-B

A strange world

What a strage world

If fishes went to school

And boys and girls

Spent all the day

Swimming in the pool

How strange if trees

could walk and talk

And flowers could

Dance and sing

How strange if

elephants could fly

Oh what a funny thing

Pravesh Vats, VI-C

Education - 2222

The world will be full of gadgets and computers

Robots will take place of our teachers

We will not be late for school

In place f heavy bags on our small shoulders

CD,s will take place

There will be no pen and pencils in our hands

Life will be living like a Disney land

Moon will be our picnic spot

No fear of exams, no problem of Mom

Papa will be our best friend

No home work, no tensions

Playing, singing and dancing on songs

will be our fun

waiting for this imaginary world.

Prashant Gogna, II-C

A kite

I often sit and wish that

I could be a kite up in the sky

And ride upon the breeze and go

which every way I chanced to blow
