MCD launches programme to check
schoolkids’ health
Health Mela to focus on women
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 12
To ensure that students enrolled in the Municipal Corporation-run schools in the Capital are free from ailments, the MCD has launched the ‘Special School Health Check-Up Programme 2002’.

In a similar programme launched last year, the MCD completed the medical check-up of more than 7.1 lakh students, which accounted for 87 per cent of the total enrolment.

The health check-up will be conducted in municipal primary schools where the children are often neglected and denied medical care. The plan has been introduced to detect disorders like anaemia, vitamin deficiency, worm infestation, refractive error, ENT disorders and skin problems.

Apart from the health check, for which paramedical staff of the municipal health institutions have been deputed, the children will also be imparted lessons in health education. The paramedics will teach the students personal hygiene, primary health care and prevention of diseases like malaria by curbing the growth and spread of mosquitoes.

The children will also be given a single dose of deworming medicine and those suffering from major ailments will be referred to hospitals for treatment and follow-up action.

This year the MCD plans to check nine lakh children studying in 1822 municipal primary schools within a time span of four weeks.

The 10-day long MTNL Perfect Health Mela, starting from October 18 at the Talkatora Grounds this year, will focus mainly on women’s health.

This year, the mela is jointly organised by the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The Health Mela, the ninth annual event, is being held in collaboration with the IMA, Rotary Club of Delhi Heritage, Maheswari Club and various departments of the Delhi Government.

The announcement for the mela was made at a press conference by Dr K. K. Aggarwal, executive vice-chairman, HCFI, Mr Narinder Sharma, CMD of the MTNL, Prof V. S. Ramamurthy, secretary of the DST, Dr G. S. Thind, medical officer of the NDMC, Mr G. K. Tyagi, vice-president, Tata Tea, and Naynee Jeyseelan, secretary of the Department of Environment of Forests.

The star attraction at the conference was former Miss India Gul Panag, who launched the campaign and said: “Everybody in India must know his or her blood pressure reading.” She also released the new definition of health. “Health is not mere absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, social, spiritual, environment and financial wellbeing.”

Dr Aggarwal said that a person might have to spend 30 to 40 years after his retirement. So it was important for everyone to plan for leading a disease-free life. The others who spoke at the conference were Mr V. S. Ramamurthy, Dr Thind, Mr G. K. Tyagi.

Rookie golfer Ashok Kumar and star player Mukesh Kumar blasted five-under 65 each to join Rohtas Singh atop the leader-board even as local hero Loganathan Gopi aced the first hole of his professional career in the second round of the Rs 6 lakh Hyundai Open 2002 being played at the par-70, Madras Gymkhana Club course, according information available in Delhi.

The leaders tallied six-under 134. The tournament is the sixth leg of the 2002-03 Hero Honda Golf Tour.

Kolkata’s Mohd. Salim was placed fourth two strokes behind the leader at four-under 136, while another Kolkatan, Feroz Ali was tied for the fifth position with Delhi’s Monish Bindra at three-under 137. Overnight-leader Mohd Islam shot a three-over 73, to slip to tied-tenth at level-par 140.

The cut was applied at nine-over 149 with as many as 55 pros and two amateurs making it to the money-making rounds.

Gopi, who belongs to the Cosmo-TNGF course, used his 7-iron, to pitch the ball five feet from the flag on the 196-yard par-3, fourth hole. The ball subsequently bounced into the cup. Gopi’s effort brought up the sixth hole-in-one in as many events on the Tour this season and the second of the tournament.

Mohd Islam aced the 17th hole in Wednesday’s opening round.

Mukesh Kumar, who returned his first win of the season at last week’s Hindu Open, did not put one foot wrong on his outward journey and was rewarded with birdies on the third, fifth and eighth.

Three-under on the tenth tee, Mueksh went on to birdie the 13th, 14th and 16th, with a bogey on the 15th handing him his day’s card of 65.

Meanwhile, Rohtas Singh scorched his front-nine, birdying the first, third, seventh and eighth. A bogey on the 13th was followed by his fifth birdie of the day on the 16th.
