Advisory panel to be re-constituted after 7 yrs
Tribune News Service

The Administrator Advisory Council, chaired by UT Administrator, Lieut Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), will meet on October 8. The Council comprises a wide spectrum of city residents, including politicians, academicians, former defence personnel, among others. It may be recollected that the last meeting had been boycotted by Congress men.

Chandigarh, September 3
The Home Ministers’ Advisory council is all set to be reconstituted. A list having as many as 10 names of prominent citizens is in circulation, sources confirmed.

The council is being re-constituted after a gap of about seven years. The last one was in place when Mr S.B. Chavan was the Union Home Minister during the tenure of Mr P.V. Narsimha Rao. The practice was discontinued when the Municipal Corporation came into being. Before the MC came into being this body more or less was the eyes and ears of the Home Minister.

The local MP used to be on it automatically. Besides this senior political leaders also found place. But all this was during the Congress Government. Now things are different as the local MP, Mr Pawan Bansal, is a Congressman while the Bharatiya Janata Party led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is at the Centre.

Sources said this body usually meets to advice the Home Minister on various issues. In the past the Home Minister himself used to listen to the ideas and opinions of council members.

With the Home Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, also being the Deputy Prime Minister, it is likely that the council will have Mr Advani as its Chairman, however, all matters will be handled by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr I.D. Swami.
