Behind the scenes
On the sets of Boom

Jackie and Ayesha Shroff’s Boom takes a funny look at the fashion-underworld nexus
Jackie and Ayesha Shroff’s Boom takes a funny look at the fashion-underworld nexus

BOOM! is the latest buzzword in Bollywood. Here’s letting you into a few secrets about red-haired fashion designers, red-hot models and serial killers in a purple boudoir.

Boom is Jackie and Ayesha Shroff’s ambitious film production after the debacle of Grahan. Currently, the entire unit is off to Dubai, shooting the climax.

Before leaving, director Kaizad Gustaad shot for a stretch of 15 days at various locations in Mumbai. So one can imagine how the action moves from Mumbai to Dubai in this funny take on the underworld-fashion nexus.

Mr Bo(o)mbastic

Cast and crew gossip has it that Kaizad is not winning any popularity contests. This, the canary cooed to us, is because he’s cocky and full of bluster. The joke on the sets is, ‘Oh! He’s so bo(o)mbastic!’ But his films are really fantastic. So everyone has no option but to keep shut and put up with Kaizad!

Day 1: Jackie Shroff arrives fashionably late for the shoot, and announces, ‘I can afford to come 15 minutes late. I am the boss.’ Seeing Kaizad, he says, ‘Actually he’s the boss.’ Then speaking to Ayesha over the phone, he mutters, ‘Okay, boss! You’re the producer!; so, who’s the boss?

Day 2:
Madh Island. Everybody is soaking up the sun, singing on the beach. Nobody is in the mood for work. Except Kaizad! He’s got his team of lunatic assistants, who dress up like cokeheads and act like weirdos, talking in accents only understood by Kaizad. After the shoot Jackie throws an impromptu party for the unit.

Day 3: At Chandivli studios in Powai shooting is on at a brisk pace. A shot is called but the exhausted leading ladies, Madhu Sapre, Katrina and Padma Lakshmi, have all dozed off. Deep in slumber, they have to be shaken up to give the next shot. It’s an easy take, but we catch them all yawning and cribbing about losing their beauty sleep!

Day 4: The Mahim and Dharavi zopadpatti is abuzz and with all the latest razzmatazz equipment the street and slum dwellers are gaping open-mouthed at the half-firang, half-Indian unit shooting for Boom. "Keep it real", Kaizad booms over the mike. The assistants scatter around, hush-hushing on their hi-tech mini-radios getting ‘real’ garbage for the shot and strewing it on the streets of Dharavi.

Day 5: Ensconced at Kaizad’s office located next to the hotspot Olive, everybody is trying to be serious, discussing the clothes and costumes for the Dubai shoot. Everybody is whispering about finishing off work and sneaking out to Olive. Anna, Jackie, New York socialite and TV producer Shruti Bhardwaj (who allegedly dated Richard Gere) flit from Olive to Kaizad’s office. Kaizad mutters, ‘I think I should shift this office to Olive.’

Jackie sports red hair and see-through dhoti

Jackie Shroff, who plays the fashionable underworld don, is having a blast shooting for the film. ‘It’s a flamboyant film, and so is my role. Boom is based on fashion, and I’m a GTM (Gujju-turned-mod),’ he joked and guffawed when we accosted him on the sets. If Jaggu’s hair was red, it was the director who kept seeing the colour each time someone from the Press tried to take a pic.

As if his red-dyed-hair wasn’t enough, he sported a see-through white dhoti with a coat while shooting in the Mahim zopadpatti. All the eunuchs got excited. Jaggu dada shook hands with them and posed for photographs with slum kids. There is a sequence in the film that is an absolute riot. Jackie’s character is sitting on a table wooing three women, while one woman is under the table, doing unmentionable things! To add to the flavour, there’s an all-girl band, with its members dressed as cats, playing in the background.

Kaizad guards his beauties from the Press

Meanwhile, having shot mostly in the nights in such places as Agripada, Chor Bazaar and hold-your-breath, Topaz, the closest thing to Moulin Rouge this side of the Nile, the heroines (Padma Lakshmi, Madhu Sapre and Katrina Kaif) are all holed up at the JW Marriott, sleeping away till late afternoon. And the bevy of beauties in the film has all the male members of the cast and crew in a state of constant high. Not to mention, Kaizad, who’s guarding his ‘angels’ against the Press like a ‘personal bodyguard.’

Meanwhile, after having rid himself of all the ‘dreadlocks’ post- Bombay Boys, Kaizad lost no time in getting rid of his girlfriend ex-Miss World Diana Hayden too. She’s currently living an anonymous life in London.

Jaaved goes on ‘killing’ spree

By the way, Jaaved Jaafri plays an important role in the film, and to spoil the fun for you, let it be told, that he’s the serial killer doing away with all the fashion designers. We witnessed Jaafri trying to kill designer Anna Singh. Earlier, the script had to be changed as Tarun Tahiliani was supposed to be gunned down in the film, but refused, saying it would be bad for his image. The other designers featuring in the film are Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra and Arjun Khanna. We’ll have to wait and watch who goes boom, and who goes bust in the film, err, fashionably speaking that is.

Ayesha designs purple boudoir

As a producer, Ayesha Shroff is sparing no efforts to make the film a truly ‘fashionable’ experience. She personally designed close friend and confidant Anna Singh’s purple boudoir. "I trust only Ayesha, as this is the first film I am appearing in. I’m very shy and nervous of the camera, but Ayesha made me feel at home with her designer bedroom. She’d even helped me design my store some years ago," confides Anna Singh emotionally. Also, a first will be scored when the film releases, since Ayesha plans to invite all the fashion critics in the country to a preview of the film, so that they can write a critique on it from a fashion point of view. Boom is definitely going to be a landmark film in the history of Indian cinema. Whether it does well at the box-office or not still remains to be seen.
