SC orders transfer of Katara case to Delhi
New Delhi, August 23
The Supreme Court today directed transfer of the Nitish Katara murder case from a Ghaziabad sessions court to a competent court of the same jurisdiction in Delhi. A bench two-judge, comprising of Justice G B Patnaik and Justice K G Balakrishnan, allowed a transfer petition filed by the mother of the victim, Ms Neelam Katara.

A gangster who is slippery as an eel
Meerut, August 23
The Meerut Police have swooped down on a number of villages in search of notorious gangster Nisha Mohammad, alias Maruti, wanted for shooting down two police constables and snatching their service rifles. Maruti allegedly shot constables Subhash and homeguard Vir Singh and snatched their rifles with the help of other gang members near Khivai police post in the last week of July.

The Delhi Police today suffered a major embarrassment when one of the senior additional commissioners of police, R. K. Sharma, was arrested in Uttaranchal’s Capital, Dehra Dun, for allegedly raping a 27-year-old married woman there.

HC quashes hike in pecuniary limit
New Delhi, August 23
In a significant ruling, the Delhi High Court today quashed the Delhi High Court (Amendment) Act, 2001, provisions enhancing lower courts' limit to hear civil cases up to the value of Rs 20 lakh in the National Capital Territory with immediate effect, holding that the state Assembly was not competent to pass such a legislation.

The Municipal Council has gone all-out to improve the sanitary conditions in the city after much dilly-dallying and apparent half-hearted measures. The campaign started following a diktat of the Deputy Commissioner, Gurgaon, Mr Anurag Rastogi, to the municipality.

Passengers rave as cops rant
Meerut, August 23
A police patrol car stationed at the roadways bus stand (Bhainsali), meant for the passenger’s safety, suddenly turned into a battle ground when the head constable (driver) of the car took on the sub-inspector and threatened him. In a tit-for-tat, the sub-inspector also went for the head constable’s jugular. Several passengers and UPSRTC employees were enjoying the live drama of the police for more than half an hour.

Dacoits’ gang busted, 5 held in Capital
New Delhi, August 23
With the arrest of five persons, the South district police today claimed to have busted a desperate gang of dacoits involved in several cases of dacoities, robberies and murders. The police claimed that it had solved several cases with their arrest, including a dacoity-cum-murder in a leather garments factory at Okhla Phase-II and in a copper factory in Okhla Phase I. Stolen materials worth Rs 13 lakh were also recovered from their possession.

SONEPAT
1 killed, 3 injured as trucks collide on GT Road
Sonepat, August 23
One person was killed and three others injured when two trucks collided on the G.T. Road near Qumashpur village, about 13 km from here. According to a report, a truck (No HR 38 5577) was on its way to Delhi when it collided with another truck.

Central School student run over by Sumo
New Delhi
A ninth standard student of Central School, Air Force Station, was crushed to death by a Tata Sumo on Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road this morning. The incident occurred when the victim, Hemant, a resident of Arya Nagar, was crossing the road. The Tata Sumo, which was coming from Gurgaon speedily, crushed the student to death. The vehicle overturned after the accident. The vehicle was attached with a call centre in Gurgaon and when the incident took place it was carrying Meenu, 25, who was injured when the vehicle overturned, the police said.
