Students, teachers allege exploitation
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 20
Students and teachers of Rajindra Model Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Kalan, yesterday observed a strike in protest against alleged exploitation by the school management.

The Affiliated and Recognised School Teachers Welfare Association, Punjab, supported the strike and participated in the rally organised in the school premises.

Meanwhile, members of the association said the management had accepted all demands of the students and had called for a meeting with the teaching staff.

The Principal of the school, Mr Ravi Nandan Sharma said the dispute was minor and everything had been solved amicably.

The students and the teachers alleged that while the teachers were underpaid, the students were being “ forced ” to shell out money at one pretext or the other. Their other demands included immediate reinstatement of some teachers who had been allegedly sacked without a notice.

Mr Sharma denied the charges saying that action was taken as per the agreement and no one was terminated.

The trouble started as soon as the classes began in the morning. The teachers and students of higher classes came out and started raising slogans. This caused tension in the school premises and the police was also called.

The strike comes close on the heals of a similar incident in Sanatan Dharam School. According to Mr Rajinder Kohli, general secretary of the association, the teachers were upset with the management for the past several months and were forced to strike due to its lack of response to their genuine demands.

He said the problem could be solved only if the management agreed to these demands which included security of job, increment in the salary as per rules, deduction of the provident fund, no compulsion on teachers to attend the school during holidays, fixed working hours as per the directive of the PSEB, salary through cheques and free education for teachers' wards.

The aggrieved students demanded that the school should stop forcing them to take extra tuitions, new fans for classrooms, a proper library, more toilets and better extra-curricular and sports activities without extra charges. They also demanded that they should not be forced to buy stationery from the school.
