Pataudi to open eye collection centre
Our Correspondent

Gurgaon, August 19
The first eye collection centre in the district will be opened at Om Indu Jain Charitable Hospital at Dhankot, around seven kilometres away from here tomorrow.

It would be formally inaugurated by the Nawab of Pataudi and famous cricketer, Mr Mansoor Ali Khan and his actress wife Ms Sharmila Tagore.

The chairman of the Trust which runs the hospital, Mr D. D. Jain, informed that the eye facilities and services in the hospital are being run and managed by the Venu Eye Institute and Research Centre, New Delhi. The new eye collection centre would also be managed by the centre.

Venu’s Satellite Hospital at Dhankot, established in 1993, is the only comprehensive eyecare centre in Gurgaon area, which caters to the people who cannot afford the costs of eyecare, added Mr Jain.

The Director of Venu Eye Institute, Delhi, Ms Tanuja Joshi, informed that out of the total 12 million blind in India, approximately 2.5 million are afflicted with corneal blindness. And 80 per cent of the 2.5 million blind in India could have been cured if enough corneas were available for implantation. She added that the country don’t have sufficient corneal tissues to perform corneal grafting. 40,000 eyes are required per year but only 21,000 eyes are generated per year. Thus, around 19,000 more blinds are added to the backlog of 2 million each year, she informed.

Set up by Dr R. K. Seth, the Venu Eye Institute and Research Centre, has been providing eyecare facilities to the poor and the needy through its effective three-tier delivery networks. The network consists of the base hospitals, the satellite hospitals and mobile eyecare units.

The new eye collection centre at Dhankot Satellite Hospital will help collect more eyes, as it would facilitate a great number of donor families in Gurgaon and surrounding areas, said the director.

She further informed that it would be easier to ensure a quicker response to an eye donation call from the areas as all the eye banks, which are located in Delhi, are far and might take time to respond to the call (donor of the eyes).

Om Indu Jain Charitable Hospital, at village Dhankot, famous for its social services, is presently providing OPD facilities for villagers in mother and childcare, eyecare, medicine, dental, ENT (eye, nose and throat) and orthopaedic where more than 150 patients avail the services daily.

BCCI move creates ripples in DDCA
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 19
The move by the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) to construct a modern cricket stadium

in Delhi has created a wave of resentment in the Delhi and District Cricket Association.

Delhi is perhaps the only Test venue in the country without a proper stadium, befitting of international standard. A few years ago, the Australian team, led by Mark Taylor, had vowed that they would never play any sort of cricket in the smoggy, foggy, polluted and unkempt cricket centre of Delhi at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground.

Though the somewhat strict pollution control law in Delhi has lessened the evil effect of vehicular pollution, and the Australian team relented to play in Delhi a few months ago, the DDCA is still known as an ill-managed body, riven with intense factionalism, and polluted for all the wrong reasons.

It’s surprising that despite being in the heart of the “power centre of the country”, with a former Union Minister, Mr Arun Jaitley as its president, the DDCA has not been able to put its house in order. And this has been the bane of the DDCA, all through.

The DDCA has about 112 clubs and over 4000 club members who elect the office-bearers, but with the proxy system being the ‘be all and end all’ of all DDCA elections, the same set of people manage to hold key positions, year after year, to the detriment of cricket in the Capital.

But it seems, nobody is willing, or capable, of changing the system, for the better. A few years ago, former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi raised a banner of revolt against the then ruling group and even succeeded in ascending power. But Bedi could not continue in power for long, and had to quit before he could consolidate his position.

Over the years, things not improved much in the DDCA. The proxy system continues to rule the roost. And now, when the DDCA is all set to construct a new stadium, comes the news that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is also all set to construct a mega stadium in the Capital, to set up shop. But the Sports Working Committee of the DDCA would have none of it. They have vowed to fight “tooth and nail” the BCCI’s bid to build a stadium in Delhi “as the prime object of the BCCI is to strengthen its affiliated units at the State-level by providing financial assistance as well as allotment of international matches.

Nepal Cricket Association signs deal with Percept
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 19
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has signed a 10-year sports management and marketing contract with Percept D’Mark India. The CAN-Percept tie-up will see Nepal becoming a cricketing destination. The idea is to bring international cricket and cricket heroes to Nepal. There are also ambitious plans to host various cricket events to make Nepal an international cricket destination.

CAN president Jay Kumar Shah said the dream of CAN “is to see Test playing countries compete with each other in Nepal and also to play One-Day Internationals in 2007. I do sincerely hope our agreement will not remain an agreement but will become a reality”.

Mr Shah said CAN had a commitment towards the development of cricket in the Kingdom of Nepal. “Having already developed a good cricketing facility in Kathmandu, CAN is now in the process of developing infrastructure in Pokhra and Beergunj. The efforts of CAN can now be seen in the growing popularity of the sport and the support and interest generated by the past few events held in Nepal”, Mr Shah elaborated.

CAN secretary Binay Pandey said, “The recent track record of the Nepal cricket team speaks volumes of the strides the sport has made in recent years with the team making it to the finals of the ACC Trophy in Singapore, which has promoted them to play Asia Cup with the cricketing giants of Asia, such as India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”

The CEO and Executive Director of Percept, Mr Sanjay Lal, said, “Percept will bring in all its expertise and contacts to promote cricket in Nepal. Cricket in Nepal is a top priority for Percept and we have undertaken a commitment to organise professional cricket tournaments every year. We have worked hard for three years to make this announcement and are extremely excited to move ahead with our dream”.

He said Percept’s commitment to sports had gone global this year with an association with Laureus World Sports for Good Foundation.

“Laureus World Sports Academy, the only recognisable world sports body, has motivated Percept to initiate India’s first and only sports academy called the Hero Indian Sports Academy. The academy will work towards bringing about social change through sports and honour talent in various sports in the country through an annual sports awards ceremony. Recently, Percept entered into a memorandum of understanding with Quintus, the parent of Wisden, and has planned a special cricket awards ceremony from January next year, which will have the blessings of the Board of Control for Cricket in India”, Mr Sanjay Lal said.
