The empty nest

I read with interest "Coping with the empty nest" (July 14) by Juhi Bakshi. It was beautifully written and worthy of appreciation for its meaningful suggestions to parents of grown up children who live separately.

The main reason for this malady is the trend of having only one or two children and living in nuclear families. This syndrome is more pronounced in the urban areas.

The joint family system greatly reduces loneliness among the aged because of the presence of a large number of relatives in the house.

Young couples should take care of their parents who have nurtured them with love and affection. They should maintain a good relationship with their parents, occasionally meeting them or inviting them at their homes.

Nowadays parents and children cannot stay at one place forever and one has no choice except to cope with the empty nest. These days young people do not want to live with their parents. However, if such parents involve themselves in social work, they can lead productive and busy lives.

Unfair to Kalam

Apropos of the "Even though the best woman hasn’t won" (June 21), Swati Gill has taken up the cudgels on the behalf of Captain Dr Lakshmi Sahgal, which is worth appreciation. Yet, her disapproving and vilifying criticism of the outstanding scientist, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was objectionable.

No matter how intransigent a feminist the author may be, she certainly cannot dictate her personal views to open-minded readers.

The article is a biased one. She has tried to denigrate a non-controversial, non-political, straightforward, man a person of integrity Kalam who has been chairing the D.R.D.O. and I.S.R.O. and has worked with about half a dozen P.Ms. The NDA led by the BJP should be applauded for putting up a non-political and non-controversial personality as a candidate for the head of state. To say that he is a Muslim who reads the Bhagavadgita is in bad taste.

The contention that Pokharan test has in any way weakened the country’s defense is totally misplaced. Pakistan had been gifted the nuclear weapon by China long ago and it was imperative to acquire a deterrent.

An insight into Islam

M.S.N. Menon has given food for thought in his article "Was the Prophet misunderstood?" (July 21). The happenings of September 11 have brought Islam centrestage. Intelligentsia all over the world is perturbed to see how fatal fanaticism can be. How can the followers of a religion can be so belligerent though professedly even the nomenclature of their religion means ‘peace’? We should delve deep into the origin and development of all religions, make a comparative study with utmost objectivity and provide a fora for inter-religion dialogues. These can be some steps in the right direction to free religions from the clutches of the lunatic fringe. Insularity among religions tends to breed bigotry. Kudos to the writer for giving an insight into Islam.
