Slaughterhouse-bound cows seized from Maruti
Meerut, July 23
The Meerut Police have busted a gang of cow smugglers and arrested its leader; two gang members, however, escaped. They were ferrying four cows in a pitiable condition in a Maruti van to a slaughterhouse. The cows were tied up and blood was oozing out of their mouths.

Villagers raze houses to pave way for road
Jhajjar, July 23
The residents of Jasaur Kheri village here demolished their own houses to clear the way for a 44-ft wide road to be constructed soon. However, the village is on tenterhooks with about 82 families living without a roof over their head for more than a week now.

A clash between the University Grants Commission and teachers of Delhi University is quite likely with the Delhi University Teachers Association taking exception to the UGC’s directive asking colleges to fill up 80 per cent of the vacant posts for three months only.

Dacoits held after dramatic 4-km chase
Gurgaon, July 23
In a swift move, the police arrested two dacoits of an interstate gang in Punhana area in Mewat and recovered goods worth Rs 40 lakh from them. The operation led by the SHO, Mr Narender Singh Kadyan, had all the ingredients of a soap. Five other members of the gang escaped under the cover of darkness.

Ponds being filled on war-footing
Narnaul, July 23
The Deputy Commissioner, Narnaul, Mr Vinit Garg, has directed the Public Health Department to sort out the drinking water problem on priority basis in case of any complaint emerging from any corner of the district. He said if need be there should be co-ordination with other departments too.

Body of farmer activist fished out of canal
Ghaziabad, July 23
The body of 72-year-old farmer activist, Chaudhri Jaipal Singh, who had been missing for the past five days, has been fished out of Ganga canal in the Jarcha police station area in Gautam Budh Nagar district.

More effective use of PCR vans on cards
New Delhi, July 23
The government has decided to review Delhi Police’s fleet of 338 Police Control Room vans, informed the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr Vidyasagar Rao said. The review of the existing strength would be done, inter alia, on the basis of average response time for each police station separately to ensure that a police station with a wider area under its jurisdiction or higher rate of crime or larger population has adequate PCR vans operating under its jurisdiction, the Minister told the Lok Sabha.

Pedestrian subway opens near SC
New Delhi, July 23
A new pedestrian subway was inaugurated by the Chief Justice of India, Mr B.N.Kirpal, at the Bhagwan Das Road today.
The Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Shiela Dikshit, was present on the occasion along with Mr Subhash Sharma, Chairman of the NDMC and Ms Tajdar Babbar, MLA and member of the NDMC.

‘Police informer’ shot dead
Faridabad, July 23
A person, who had informed the police about the smuggling of illicit liquor in the nearby village of Jawa, was shot at by some unidentified persons. The victim, identified as Ishwar Singh, was injured and has been admitted to a hospital.

Man abducts neighbour to settle old scores
New Delhi, July 23
The North district police have arrested one person on charges of abducting his neighbour in the same area. Police said that the accused, Inderjeet, resident of Timarpur, had some problem with his neighbour, Prem Kishor, which was amicably solved.

Illegal weapons factory unearthed in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad, July 23
The Ghaziabad police claimed to have unearthed an illegal arms factory in Muradpur village of Garh Mukteshwar and arrested two persons. The police have also seized a dozen country-made revolvers, two rifles, large quantity of cartridges and some equipment and machinery used for manufacturing arms.

Two Indian students, Siddhartha Chaudhuri and Anjana Sasidharan, have been named winners of the Lucent Technologies Global Science Scholars Programme, one of the world’s largest annual academic competition designed to support science students who are pursuing careers in information and communications technologies.

State-of-the-art cancer hospital in village near Rewari
Rewari, July 23
Dr S.S. Yadav Ram-Bhagwan Charitable Institute of Cancer Management and Research, Mirpur, 10 km from Rewari, is perhaps the first functional institute of cancer management and research in rural India as well as the first cancer hospital in the private sector in Haryana.
