Dr Abdul Kalam
by Ranga

"YOU are disturbing the Press conference (of Dr Abdul Kalam)," said Minister for Communications Pramod Mahajan as I approached Dr Kalam for his signature on his sketch that I had drawn. Mahajan was accompanying Dr Kalam and was looking after his engagements.

Dr Kalam was good enough to oblige me with his autograph just before he started his Press conference, which he had postponed for a day. He was scheduled to meet the Press soon after he filed his nomination papers in Parliament for the post of President. He was supported by the ruling parties and the Congress, but not by the Left parties. After having failed to reach him at the Parliament due to the security arrangements, I went to the Constitution Club, where he was expected to meet mediapersons soon after filing his nomination papers. But the meeting was postponed by a day. It was at that meeting that I was able to meet Dr Kalam and take his signature on his sketch in the midst of the huge crowd that had gathered around him. This happened on June 19, 2002.
