Hockey body elects office-bearers

Ludhiana, July 15
Office-bearers of the District Women Hockey Association (DWHA), Ludhiana, were elected at the general body meeting of the association held here today. They were elected unanimously for the term of four years. The meeting was presided over by Mr J.S. Toor, Dean Students Welfare, Punjab Agricultural University.

Olympian Sukhbir Singh Grewal was elected president, while vice- presidents were Mr J.S. Toor, Olympian Hardip Singh Grewal, former international players Sharanjit Kaur and Pushpinder Kaur and former captain of Indian hockey team Ramandeep Singh.

Mrs Surinder Dhir had been elected Honorary Secretary. The four newly appointed joint secretaries were Ms Nirmal Rishi, Ms Arunjit Kaur, Mr Manmohan Mishra and Ms Rashmi Gangwani. Mr Jagbir Singh Grewal had been elected treasurer.

The members of executive were: Mr M.S. Jawanda, Mrs Sushma Tandon, Mrs Kusum Madhra, Mrs Amarjit Kaur, Mr Jarnail Singh, Mr Rupinder Singh, Mr Kamikkar Singh, Mr Johnson, Mr Manpreet Singh, Ms Satinder Kaur, Mr Puran Singh, Prof Kamaljit Singh, Mr Major Singh Sohi, Mr Jarnail Singh, Mr Tejdeep Bhalla, Mr Amrik Singh, Mr Harminder Pal Singh, Mr Lakhwinder Singh, Mrs Pritpal Kaur, Mr Gurpreet Singh, Mr Rachhpal Singh Nagi. The convener of selection committee (senior and junior section) were: Mrs Pritpal Kaur and Mrs Pushpinder Kaur, respectively.

A two-minute silence was observed in the memory of Mrs Ranjodh Kaur Grewal, former president of the association. It was decided to institute Ranjodh Trophy for the winners of district women league. It was also decided to hold the district women hockey league for the year 2002-03 in the first week of September, 2002.

The association would organise a coaching camp for women players before their participation in state women hockey championship. International players would also be invited to give guidance to the players. Mr S.L. Lotey attended the meeting on behalf of Punjab Sports Department.
