Our Correspondent

Mullanpur-Garibdas, July 15
The agonising one-and-a-half year wait by a UK-based NRI Mr Nathu Ram Puri, for the inauguration of a ready school building is likely to end on July 19 when the Chief Minister, Mr Amarinder Singh, is scheduled to open the building for children.

The UK-based Puri Foundation of Mr Puri had completed the construction of the building spending Rs 1 crore and donated it to villagers. The building has been awaiting inauguration for a long time and the matter was reported by Chandigarh Tribune on May 16, 2002.

Mr D.D Puri, president of the local unit of the foundation, said the British High Commissioner to India, senior officials of Nottingham University, UK, apart from Punjab ministers and officials were expected to be present on the occasion. A request to the Chief Minister to inaugurate the building was made in March, 2002.

Mr Nathu Ram Puri, who is expected to reach here on July 17, had great plans for development of the village and the region, said Mr D.D Puri. He said the NRI wanted a knowledge-based industry for the region and was ready to spend his time and resources. ‘‘If the government agrees, Mr Nathu Ram wants to set up a medical institute and an agro-based industry at the village’’, said Mr D.D Puri.

Meanwhile, the local unit of the foundation is engaged in preparations to welcome the Chief Minister. The school building is being painted and decorated.

The NRI had to wait for quite a few months to get the sanction from the Punjab Government to change the name of the school to Shree M.L. Puri Senior Secondary Government School. The school building is spread over 20,000 square feet and can accommodate over 600 children. The land for the building was given by the village panchayat.

A part of the building housing the Government Senior Secondary School for Boys was declared unsafe sometime ago. In April, the village panchayat taking an initiative shifted the school to the new building.

HIGH COURT
Don’t notify name of civic body chief
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 15
A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today ruled that the name of Malerkotla Municipal Council’s elected president would not be notified till the outcome of an inquiry being conducted by the government into the alleged forgery of signatures of a councillor and other related matters.

The orders were passed on a petition filed by acting president of Malerkotla Municipal Council, Kewal Krishan Jindal, along with 13 other councillors, challenging a resolution allegedly passed by 12 members, along with MLA Razia Sultana, electing Mr Faqir Mohammad as president.

It was alleged by the petitioners that on July 1 — the day elections were held — they were physically prevented from entering the main entrance by anti-social elements at the behest of the MLA. In the meantime, the remaining 12 members elected Faquir Mohammad as president.

Markfed action satisfactory

The High Court today expressed satisfaction over the action taken by the Markfed authorities in fixing responsibility of “defaulting” officials involved in the alleged scam pertaining to the purchase of sub-standard polythene sheets for covering foodgrains.

Taking up the case, a Division Bench of the High Court, comprising Mr Justice G.S. Singhvi and Ms Justice Kiran Anand Lall, observed that the “latest status report” on the basis of regular departmental inquiry has been filed by Markfed’s counsel. The Judges added that after perusing the status report and hearing counsel for Markfed, besides Punjab’s Advocate-General, they were satisfied with the action taken by the authorities concerned in fixing the responsibility of the defaulting officials.

The High Court, it may be recalled, had taken suo-motu note of a report appearing in an English daily alleging that a test conducted by a Chandigarh-based laboratory on polythene sheets purchased by Markfed for covering foodgrains had exposed a scandal apparently having financial implications running into several crores.

Pronouncing the orders, Mr Justice A.S. Garg of the High Court had also directed the issuance of notices to the state of Punjab and the Central Bureau of Investigation. Observing that the matter was of a serious nature, Mr Justice Garg, in his detailed order, had also asked the respondents to tell why the matter should not be investigated by the premier investigating agency to ensure that the actual offenders, who had misappropriated and embezzled the money, causing financial loss to Markfed, should not be prosecuted by registering a case.

The report had alleged that Markfed had sent samples for testing to a local laboratory after complaints were received from all over the state regarding sub-standard polythene sheets supplied by a Rajkot firm for Rs 7 crore. As per the report, nearly 40 per cent of the samples were found to be defective. The report had also stated that another batch of sheets delivered recently to Markfed by two firms from Delhi and Rajkot after a fresh tender was invited were also found sub-substandard. It had further claimed that the facts indicated the involvement of some senior officials of Markfed.

Notice to Chief Secy on Sidhu’s belongings
Kiran Deep

Chandigarh, July 15
A local court today issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Punjab and SP Vigilance Bureau, Punjab, to file a reply acting on an application moved by the suspended Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) chairman Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu.

Ravi Sidhu had moved a plea in the court of UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Mr Sanjay Sandhir, in the afternoon to direct the Chief Secretary, Punjab, to take the possession of government accommodation — house number-914 in Sector 39 — allotted to him by the Punjab Government. And also to direct the SP, Vigilance, Punjab, to deliver the goods inclusive of everything lying in the house.

Ravi Sidhu stated in the plea that he was forcibly taken away from his house in Sector 39 by police personnel on March 25, without affording any opportunity to him to talk to any of his relatives, acquaintances or friends. The police had also taken away some of the documents also. He had also stated in his plea that the possession of his government house had been taken over by the Vigilance Bureau personnel from that day onwards and the bureau had not delivered yet all articles and valuables lying in the house or given those in the possession of the police. He further stated that the authority letters from time to time in favour of four individuals had been got attested from the court for delivery of goods but he remained unsuccessful in getting back his belongings.

Giving details, Sidhu stated in the plea that he had to pay the rent of the house despite the fact that the physical possession of the house was not with him but with Vigilance Bureau, Punjab. Sidhu said that it was his duty to return the possession of the house to the authority which had allotted the house on his favour (the Punjab Government). Thus he wanted to deliver the possession of the house to the Punjab Chief Secretary and at the same time Sidhu prayed that the Vigilance SP be directed to deliver the possession of all his belongings which were lying in the house.

Star tantrum at its peak
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, July 15
Starry airs were least expected from a non-star like Suman Ranganathan but the mediapersons of the city had a taste of it when they were invited to the opening ceremony of a new outlet of Cossets, a chain of department stores, little did they realise that their day would end up in such a wild goose chase.

After inaugurating the department store she gave mediapersons a slip only to be told that an interview session would be held in Hotel Shivalikview afterwards. Later she refused to meet the press on the pretext that she was too tired to talk. Mediapersons got a chance to talk to her only after her two friends — Swati Loomba, an executive producer of tele serials, and Rohit Verma, a fashion designer — coaxed her into giving an interview and that too after trying for about one hour.

Suman, who started her career in films with ‘Fareb’, managed to shine through a negative role in “Aa Ab Laut Chalen” and more recently “Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam” where she played the role of Sharukh Khan’s sister. But what took her to the zenith of glamour was “Jao chahe Dilli, Mumbai, Agra—-”, a song from film “Kurukshetra.”

About her role in “Hum Tumahare—-”, Suman said her role was drastically cut short during the finalisation period. “When we watched the original Tamil version, the subject matter appealed to me, but it took a different shape when it was completed after four years,” she added.

Suman, who is married to model-turned-actor turned businessman Gautam Kapoor, is presently paying more attention to her married life. These day she is busy taking classes in cooking, computer graphics and playing piano. Looking forward to act in more meaningful positive roles, Suman said she had been recently offered a couple of roles of her choice. “Who is directing a film is not important. It is the subject matter that is more important,” she said.

She said her glamourous image went against her. “Glamour is important, but in my case it did not help me as I was typecast,” she said. She would like to do some off-beat roles, but till that time she was happy playing wife’s role in the real life. Marrying Gautam was the best decision I had taken since a long time ,” she said. They had known each other for about eight years before they decided to tie the nuptial knot. “We were friends and doing a lot of shows and suddenly Cupid struck and we got married, she said.
