Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 24
To protest against the proposed hike in fee structure of technical and higher education courses, the Ludhiana unit of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a gate rally outside SCD Government College here today.

The agitating students burnt the effigy of Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, Punjab, and Mr Lal Singh, Finance Minister. They raised slogans against the anti-education policies of the Punjab Government and said that it was trying to make education its source of income.

Addressing the rally, Mr Ashu Gupta, president of the Government College unit of ABVP, said that the proposed fee hike would make it impossible for the students from middle class to take up technical and higher education.

The district unit secretary, Mr Mohit Goyal, said that ABVP would raise the issue all over the state and motivate students to fight against the dictatorship of government. He demanded from the government to withdraw its decision on increasing fee in colleges of the state.

Mr Sandeep Kapoor, district unit president, said that the government was acting in this manner was due to an inactive student movement in Punjab. He said that by imposing a ban on student council elections in the state, the government was trying to suppress the students’ rights. He appealed to the government to lift the ban so that the students could elect their representatives freely.

SSF asks govt to curb blasphemy
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 24
The Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) has taken strong exception to the indifference of the state government towards attacks on Sikhs and has further warned the government that failure to take timely action against the acts of blasphemy could lead to the communal tension in Punjab.

In a statement here today, the SSF President, Mr Gurcharan Singh Grewal, observed that the arrest of two Sikh youth from Moga on charges of conspiracy to kill Baba Piara Singh Bhaniara and Ashutosh of Nur Mahal sect was being played up at the instance of senior government functionaries. “Any attempt to link these arrests with terrorism will cost very dear to the extent that hard earned peace in the state can be disturbed,” he added

The SSF functionary charged the previous SAD-BJP government as well as the Congress government with adopting an attitude of indifference and aloofness to meticulously planned successive attacks on Sikh panth by blasphemous elements. Had the government acted in right earnest to check the objectionable activities of people like Baba Bhaniara and Ashutosh and his close supporters of Nur Mahal sect, the situation would not have come to such a pass.
