DMCH staff stir continues
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 18
The employees of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital continued their strike in response to a call given by the employees’ union. The strike call has been given following the breakdown of talks between the union leaders and management over the shifting of Gastroenterology Ward.

Mr Chander Mohan Kalia, the union president in a press statement today said the management considered their demands to be “illogical and illegal” but the union had every right to know the status of the DMCH and Hero DMC Heart Institute. “The management can not take us for granted. They can not shift the ward forcibly”, said Mr Kalia.

Meanwhile, the DMCH Management also alleged that the employees had made an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt the hospital functioning by staging a dharna.

Dr Rajoo Singh Chinna, the Medical Superintendent (P) in a press statement said,” For us patient’s interest is the primary interest and under all circumstances the hospital will keep on running smoothly”.

The management also refuted the “baseless” claim made by the union that they were able to hit the hospital working by calling the on-duty staff on dharna. It also claimed that wards were running in normal manner as extra staff was there to look after the patients.

DC for strict implementation of traffic rules
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 18
With a view to minimising the chances of accident at night, a special campaign is being launched by the district administration to put up reflectors and tapes on the front and rear of tractor trailers, bicycles, rickshaws, horse carts and other vehicles which do not have back lights with the involvement of voluntary and social organisations.

This was disclosed by Mr Anurag Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing a special meeting of the officers of the departments concerned organised to strictly implement the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to regulate the flow of traffic in the state at Bachat Bhawan today.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that at the initial stage 10,000 reflectors would be distributed to the SDMs of all subdivisions who would arrange to put up the reflectors on the vehicles though the field staff of development and panchayats departments involving the other social and educational institutions. In the area falling within the municipal limits the reflectors would be put up under the supervision of the municipal corporation officers. Mr Agarwal said that the local firms would be encouraged to manufacture reflectors in large numbers and their outlets would be opened at important places so that the vehicle owners could easily purchase the reflectors and put these up on the vehicles.

In the meeting it was also decided to strictly implement the directions of the High Court regarding the buses and other vehicles being used to carry schoolchildren. The Deputy Commissioner said getting all conditions enforced by the High Court would be the responsibility of the principal concerned and they would issue the authority letters to carry the student of their school without which a vehicle or auto rickshaw would not be allowed to take the students. He said as per the instructions of the court drivers of school buses must have experience of a minimum of five years, not having been challaned more than twice and not, having committed any offence relating to rash and negligent driving. The drivers and conductors would have to wear proper uniforms and all buses should have the permits to carry school children for education purpose as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. As per these rules the owner would have to submit the list of the drivers along with photographs and other particulars to establish the identity of the driver and the vehicle driven by person other than the driver shall be treated as being contravention of the permit.

Mr Agarwal told the SDMs concerned to hold the meetings of the principals of the schools and ask them to submit the lists of the vehicles being used to bring students to the schools and check the irregularities in their vehicles during the vacations. He directed the DTO and police officers to make extensive checking of the school buses and vehicles.
