HPCA, Young Brigade register wins

Chandigarh, June 18
The HPCA Junior Academy and Young Brigade, Delhi, outplayed their respective rivals, Bengal Young Stars and Mohali Cricket Association XI, by five wickets and 114 runs, respectively, in the All-India Under 17 Cricket Meet played here at the cricket stadium, Sector 16, and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. Vikram Thakur who claimed four wickets for the HPCA team was adjudged the man of the match, while in the second tie, Rajinder Ramola was given the man of the match award.

In the first tie, Avimanu Chaudhary scored 28 runs but Bengal XI were bowled out for 99 runs with just three boundaries. Vikram Thakur and Anurag bagged four and three wickets, respectively. The HPCA in reply, scored 100 runs for five wickets with Minesh Thakur and Barun Sharma scoring 21 and 17 runs, respectively. Deboproyo Roy took four wickets.

In the second tie, Young Brigade Xi batted first and scored 277 runs all out. Rajinder Ramola and Shawaj Khan were the main scorers with 79 and 67 runs, respectively. Gagandeep clinched three wickets, while Harsimranjeet and Parminder bagged two wickets each.

In reply, the Mohali Cricket Association were bowled out for 163 runs. Arshad Ali and Baldeep Singh scored 35 and 28 runs, respectively. Mukesh Kumar also supported by scoring 22 runs. Rajender Ramola, Shawaj Khan and Nakul Chopra each claimed two wickets.

Mr I.D. Kamboj, president of the Sports Promoters Club, said the winning team would get Rs 11,000 and runner-up Rs 5,100.

Kabaddi tourney

The Haryana Power Sports Group (HPSG), bagged the All-India Inter-state Electricity Board Kabaddi Tournament when they beat defending champions the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board (TNSEB) 21-15 in the final played here last evening. The half-time score read 14-5. Earlier, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board (HPSEB) outplayed the Maharashtra State Electricity Board 35-21 to attain third place.

15 kiosks removed

SAS Nagar, June 18
The enforcement staff of the SAS Nagar Municipal Council today removed at least 15 kiosks from the rehri market of Phase 3 B 1 here today. The drive was carried out after the residents complained to the Deputy Commissioner about the traffic congestion in front of the rehri market due to unauthorised kiosks.

Barring some heated exchanges between kiosks owners and the enforcement staff, the drive went on peacefully. The in charge of the drive, Mr Kesar Singh, said the rehriwallahs were told in advance to remove their kiosks.

A few months back, the enforcement staff had been assaulted by owners of the kiosks when the former had gone to remove the kiosks.

Sanitation work allotted to private contractors

SAS Nagar, June 18
The SAS Nagar Municipal Council has allotted the work of sanitation in the town to private contractors. According to information available, the work has been allotted at rates much lower than those for the last year.

An official said the work of sanitation had been divided into 10 zones. For Phases 1 and 6, the work had been allotted for Rs 33,000, Phases 2 and 3A for Rs 30,000, Phases 3B1 and 3B2 for Rs 36,000, Phases 4 and 5 for Rs 36,000, Sector 70 for Rs 31,000 and for Sector 71 for Rs 28,000.
