Karun Chandhok races to third F3 podium New Delhi, June 4 During the qualifying sessions held on Saturday and Sunday morning, Karun was in good form and finished with an impressive fourth and fifth position for the two races, with just a few tenths separating the drivers. His fourth place on the grid for Race 1 was the first time that Karun qualified ahead of his team-mate Olivio Piccione. With abnormally high temperatures on Sunday, the drivers were in for a hard race. Chandhok made a good start, but lost out amidst a scramble for positions at the second corner. He then made a brave move past Jasper Carlsen on the inside into the 200km Copse corner to move back into fourth place. When championship leader Adam Carroll made a mistake, Karun moved upto third place and was rapidly closing in on Stephen Colbert until he was hit on the back straight by Rob Austin. That let Colbert get away and meant that Karun had to settle for third place. After the first race, Chandhok said, “I was really enjoying the race. The car was very good and full credit to the team at T-Sport who have done a superb job with the car. It was a shame that Austin hit me because he is anyway in the championship class and we were not racing for position. I just lost the rhythm. Otherwise, I think it could have been a good race with Colbert.” The conditions for Race 2 was very different. The temperature dropped by over 10 degrees, which meant that the grip levels on the track were different. Karun moved upto third place by lap 2, but was struggling with a handling imbalance in the car, causing it to understeer in all the high-speed corners costing him time. The end result was that he finished where he qualified for the race, in fifth place, but was not too disappointed afterwards. “The big change in temperature made a bigger difference to the balance of the car than we anticipated. It’s amazing how much the wind affects the F3 cars in the high-speed corners. But I’am still quite happy with the result. It means that I have cemented my place firmly in fourth place in the championship. The next race at Castle Combe will be difficult for us because there is only just over an hour of testing for me to learn the circuit but after that I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season. It’s amazing to think that we still have more than half the season left”. |
