The city will soon have a professionally managed power-supply system. The Chandigarh Administration, in collaboration with a private party, is setting up a 24-hour call centre to take down complaints from all over the city.

The district administration has decided to weigh all LPG cylinders being supplied by various oil companies in the township. This has been decided after gas cylinders being supplied by the Indian Oil Corporation to a local agency here on May 31 was found to be underweight.

2 women lawyers lose licences
Chandigarh, June 4
In major decision, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana today cancelled the licences of two women advocates — Ms Kulwant Kaur and Ms Seema Shridhar. The Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Anmol Rattan Sidhu, said the enrollment committee of the council had made a recommendation to the Bar Council of India (BCI) in this regard under Section 26 of the Advocates’ Act.

Govt puts 4,000 jobs on the line

About 4,000 employees of the Haryana State Minor Irrigation and Tubewells Corporation Limited and their families face a bleak future, as the government has decided to shutdown the department at the end of the month in view of heavy losses. The employees who are to be retrenched are on strike for the past two months, as they have not been paid for the past three months.


Civil defence machinery set in motion

In view of rising tension between India and Pakistan, the civil defence machinery in the town is being put in place. The local administration has already divided the town into 15 parts. The exercise of identifying the rescue shelters in the government buildings has begun.

Bust fake degree racket

HIS has reference to your report regarding the fake degree racket for obtaining advocate licence (Chandigarh Tribune, May 13). I would like to bring it to your attention that this racket has assumed serious proportions today. As far as I know, since 1987, 30 to 40 per cent of candidates have obtained licence from the Bar Council on the basis of fake degrees.

PUDA “harassing” ex-serviceman’s wife
Kharar, June 4
Ms Saroj Kumari, wife of Subedar Inderjit (retd), in a letter to the Chief Minister, has alleged that officers of PUDA, Mohali, are harassing her. They are neither allotting her a plot in Mohali nor refunding her Rs 1,05,000 deposited for the past more than one year.

Telephone bills

The Principal General Manager (Telecom), Chandigarh has stated in a press note that the department will not disconnect any telephones for which earlier bills have already been paid though the bills recently issued to them show arrears of bills.

Shramdan concludes today

The annual Shramdan — a voluntary effort to desilt the Sukhna Lake — comes to a close tomorrow. The Shramdan had been curtailed this year to a period of three weeks.

Theft in Fire Dept: statements recorded

A committee on an alleged theft in the Fire Department here yesterday recorded staff statements of the Sector 11 and Industrial Area Fire Stations. The committee called as many as 10 witnesses and recorded their statements to match their statements with their statements given earlier to another inquiry committee headed by the Additional Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Mr Ashok Vashishth.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation could sell only 23 sites for Rs 2.62 crore at the big sale of 169 commercial sites here today. The corporation could, however, draw solace in selling commercial sites for the first time in Mauli Jagran after repeatedly feeling to hold auctions.

Soccer boys return confident
Chandigarh, June 4
The spirited soccer boys of St Stephen’s Soccer Academy, Sector 45, are back from their two-country European tour, with lot of confidence, poise and temperament. They were accompanied by two coaches and one manager. Mr Harold Carver, principal of the St Stephen’s School, was the brain behind this vital exposure trip. He said it was nice, that our boys performed well but they still need to work hard to further improve themselves. The boys played in England and Italy during their four-week tour.

Twentythree-year-old Ajay Gujral, youngest certified golf-teaching professional in India, is holding three structured coaching camps at the Chandigarh Golf Club starting today. The main features of these coaching camps are lessons in grip, aim, alignment, stance, posture, chipping, pitching, sand play and putting. Simple yet highly teaching methods will be used at these camps.

The City Beautification Committee of the Municipal Corporation here today inconlusively discussed allowing the writing of religious slogans in cremation ground. This issue could not initially find favour with councillors who thought the slogans might spark off competition from various sects in the community for acceptance of their philosophy.

Blacklisted houses still incomplete

While the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority has decided to charge extension fee from plot holders who were illegally issued completion certificates by the local Estate Office in December 2000, a number of “blacklisted” houses are still under construction.

Anti-encroachment drive in Sec 40, 41
Chandigarh, June 4
In an anti-encroachment drive, a team of the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), today removed illegal entry gates to more than 20 houses in Sectors 40 and 41. All these opening had been created on road openings thus compromising the safety of the road users.
