Q I have P III 866, 128 MB RAM, 810e mercury board, 20 G.B HDD, 1.44 FDD, 52x Samsung CD ROM, ATX cabinet and Motorola internal modem. Actually it was working fine. Suddenly it gave some error messages on the blue screen. Then it got struck and I managed to restart it. I thought I had problem in Windows so I tried to reinstall Windows Me (millennium edition) but now I'm facing some problem. I'm getting error like " SUWIN " message while collecting information and Coping Windows at 10 per cent of process completion. I have changed many CDs, RAM, CPU fan etc for that. Please tell me how can I get rid from this problem.

— Sandeep, Patiala

A For the appropriate solution of your problem, you must write the exact error messages you get. These error messages have critical information that are essential for troubleshooting. The blue screen can be represented by many types of errors so it is really impossible to troubleshoot the problem with this kind of information. As far as the SUWIN is concerned there could be hundreds of error message related to SUWIN. So, please write your problem in detail with exact error messages.

Q I have Pentium 4, 8 MB, 32-bit, 50xmax CD ROM, working on Windows Me with internal 56 KBPS Motorola modem. I have been facing the problem of having bad sectors in my drive C. Whenever I do defrag drive C:, it shows 10 per cent complete and then shows "contents of drive have changed, restarting" for more than 30 times. After this much time it starts showing progress beyond 10 per cent and again at 81 per cent complete, it comes back again and restarts. After completing defrag, it shows "4096 bytes in bad sectors". I have also run Scan disk in the Standard as well as Thorough modes with "automatically fix errors" but nothing happens. Kindly give solution. Secondly whenever I boot my computer, I get Mixer-untitled over Desktop and some times it says "An illegal operation has been performed" and the computer hangs. Thirdly Drive C: has 126 MB free space and the Internet connection runs slow. Kindly tell me how to increase the free space in Drive C: so that Internet works fast.

Gurcharan Dhillon, Panchkula

A Regarding your first query, you must disable screen saver or any other video wallpaper, before running defrag as the situation mentioned by is caused by running any program in background. Not only screensaver but also applications running in the system tray could also cause this problem. Now talking of post defrag and Scandisk scenario. As mentioned by you that scan disk reported 4096 bytes in bad sectors. Scandisk will not make these bad sectors good, but it will only mark them bad so that no fresh data is being written on it. This will make this track redundant as if it does not appear in your hard disk. However, there is a difference, as the bad sectors have a tendency to grow, thus scandisk does not guarantee that no worse sectors would come up. So the role of scandisk is only limited. So on choosing the option automatically fix the error will quietly fix the bad sector and will not inform you of anything. Regarding your other query related to free space on your hard disk, you should remove all unnecessary programs from your system and also clear the unwanted files from your PC to create the necessary disk space. As a rule of thumb you must have minimum 10 per cent of your disk space free.

Q I have two PCs. One is Pentium III, 1 GHz processor, and 810 motherboard with 128 RAM, 40 GB hard disk and other PC is Celeron 900 processor with, 810 motherboard, 128 RAM, and 40 GB hard disk. I work as an MT at home. Now daily, in evening time, I have to download the voice files and have to do the other work. My hardware person makes P III as a server and connects the two machines with the LAN card. The problem is that though I get good speed on server but the speed on Celeron in not good. I have to work on other PC, but Yahoo! messenger and MSN messenger works slow on Celeron. Yahoo! messenger connects and after some time disconnects. It gives the message that there is some "Firewall" and I can't use the voice in Yahoo! messenger, and receiving and sending messages procedure is very late, but on the server, its speed is great. The same goes for MSN messenger.

Harleen, Bathinda

A There is no doubt that Pentium III is more superior than Celeron in all respect. However, for basic applications like surfing, chatting on the Internet using Yahoo Messenger, MSN Net meeting etc. there is not much of a difference, though you will always notice some differences. As far as your problem about frequent disconnection from the Internet is concerned, I think this is more specific to the modem and telephone line rather than your computer. You must check all modem settings and add the line S10=50 in extra settings dialogue box under the modem configuration. This will take care of the frequent disconnection from the Internet. However, if you are sharing your Internet connection, then you must check the proxy server settings, as this may be the possible reason for frequent disconnection and also slow speed. Normally the proxy server has an inbuilt firewall also, which limits the Internet communication. You must first go through the help file of your proxy server and should read about the features of the firewall to enable voice communication over the Internet. From the description of your problems, it also appears to me that you probably do not need a dedicated server and can very well use your Pentium III machine for your normal applications also. In a nutshell, I think your proxy server settings are not optimal, which is giving you all problems.

Q I've a Celeron 900Mhz. PC with ASUS 810e - CUWE-RM/G/SWA/OM-UAY Motherboard, Motorola SM56 internal soft modem (PCI II, release 5.0, TS04 build 84.32). The motherboard also has an AMR (Audio Modem Riser) socket, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD. It is presently configured to run multi-boot O/S (Win98/2K/Red Hat Linux). And I'm planning to install Solaris 2.8 also. It has been officially notified on Motorola site that the company has withdrawn its soft modem products from market since Dec' 2K1. The company no longer provides any latest technical support. So, I have an intention to utilise the AMR socket. I wish to know that

1.What exactly is AMR?

2.Does it have an onboard controller?

3.Its hardware compatibility with *NIX O/S apart from Windows.

4.Its advantages and limitations over ordinary modem.

5.Available AMR products in Indian market that can be configured with above OS platforms.

I'm sure all this information will also help other users to use this feature, if possible.

B.K. Sharma, Zirakpur

A Regarding your queries, AMR (Audio/Modem Riser) is a specification developed by Intel for packaging the analog I/O audio functions of modem circuitry together with a codec chip on a small board that plugs directly into a computer's motherboard. The AMR card can also provide the foundation for higher-quality audio solutions such as 3D positional audio and better MIDI music production and can also be used very efficiently for modems. Regarding your second query, I must say that it has riser boards and interface, therefore it cannot really be called onboard controllers. And moreover these are authentic hardware specifications designed by Intel, so it works for *nix/Windows operating systems. As far as its advantages are concerned, you can get better performance both from your audio and modem as mentioned above. Since it has better error correction and data compression features, so you expect faster and better Internet connectivity.

QI have Cyrix 333 MHz, 10 GB HDD, 64 RAM, Samsung CD ROM, with Internal Motorola SM56 Modem, and Yamaha Sound Card. My problem is that I have two partitions in my HDD and Bad Sectors have developed in one partition of the Hard disk and other partition is OK. Each time I run Norton Antivirus the system hangs and the Windows default scandisk cannot repair the damage.

Imran Khan, Malerkotla.

A The bad sectors are one of the most common and deadliest problem related to the hard disks. IN order to cure this you must mark all bad sectors first with the help of Scandisk and then run Norton Antivirus. Any program, which is being written on the bad sectors, would create problems and therefore you are probably getting problems with Norton Antivirus. Since bad sectors have the tendency to grow, you should either get your hard disk low level formatted and bad sectors washed off or replace your hard disk with a new one.

Q I have Cyrix 300 MHz motherboard with 10.2GB hard disk and 128 MB RAM. I have connected this computer through proxy and everything works good but my keyboard hangs sometimes without letting the system hang. When I plug in again the keyboard port it starts typing. Please help me out by giving a solution to my problem. I have changed my motherboard as well as hard disk but could not solve the problem.

Babita

A Simply load the default BIOS setup in the BIOS feature set up for the solution of your problem. I am hopeful that this will take care of your problem for good.

Q A few days ago, my PC got infected with Macro viruses and due to this, all of my macros and auto corrects got damaged. Due to this the processing speed of MS Word '97 got slow. Firstly, I have uninstalled Complete Office '97 package and reinstalled the same. But the problem has not been solved. Hence, I have formatted my hard disk and loaded all software again. Due to this, all macros and auto corrects have been lost. I want to know the program file in which the "Auto Corrects" are being loaded so that, in future, in case such problem, I can take a back up of the file.

Bilwadal Chowdhury

A. The macros and the auto correct features of Microsoft word are being stored in the Template directory. You can take a back up of this directory for backing up macros and Auto correct feature in Microsoft word.

Q I have Celeron 800, Vintron 810E Motherboard with 256 MB RAM. I want to put a graphic card in my PC. But my vendor said me that you can't put Graphic Card in your 810E series Motherboard because there is no AGP Slot. You will have to buy 815 Series Motherboard. But, in your Login Paper dated ( May 6, 2002) in Dr. Tribune you told Jeffrey Dhaliwal that Graphic Card can be put in 810i or 810E series Motherboard. I am confused. Please explain.

Sukesh Bansal, Bathinda

A You can surely put a graphic card in your 810E motherboard. Since graphic card can be installed in AGP/PCI slot, so you always have the option. If your motherboard does not have a AGP slot, then you can install the graphic card in the PCI slot. So there is no need to change the motherboard.
