Indian Airlines land in Goswami Cricket semi-final
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 16
Defending champions Indian Airlines trounced Young Friends by 72 runs to fly into the semi-final of the 29th Goswami Ganesh Dutt Memorial Cricket Tournament at the SGTB Khalsa College ground. India discard Vijay Dahiya, who scored a fine 69 with the help of ten fours off 60 balls, was adjudged the man of the match.

Indian Airlines will take on the winners of the quarter-final match between Chand Khanna and Collage Group in the semi-final on May 24. Chand Khanna meet Collage Group on May 18.

Young Friends won the toss and asked Indian Airlines to bat. Indian Airlines knocked up 251 for eight in 40 overs. Skipper Vijay Dahiya, Ravneet Ricky and Yuvraj Singh indulged in batting pyrotechniques to push up the scoredboard very fast. R R Parinda cracked an unbeaten 44.

The 104 runs opening wicket partnership between Ravneet Ricky and Vijay Dahiya in 16.4 overs laid the foundation for Airlines’ big score.

For Young Friends, left-arm spinner Tarun Gupta bowled well, and took three wickets for 42 runs. Leg-spinner Rakshit Pant too had a fine spell of 3 for 27.

In reply, Young Friends failed to cope up with the top class bowling of Indian Airlines, and at one stage, were reeling at seven wickets down for 81 runs. But Victor and skipper Rajiv Verma, who remained not out on 49, displayed a lot of resilience to put on 75 runs for the eighth wicket to give some semblance of dignity to the Young Friends total. Young Friends folded up for 179 for nine wickets in 40 overs. Medium pacer Gagandeep Singh, left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh and off-spinner Ishan Ganda bowled well to claim two wickets each.

The star-studded Indian Airlines team did not have to work up too much sweat as they had immense depth in both batting and bowling to easily outwit Young Friends.

The presence of Yuvraj Singh, who has been selected for the Indian one-day squad against West Indies, added a lot of lustre to the Airlines batting.
