Young Friends stun FCI in Goswami Cricket

New Delhi, May 15
Young Friends stunned Food Corporation of India (FCI) by nine wickets to move into the quarter-final of the 29th Goswami Ganesh Dutt Cricket Tournament at the SGTB Khalsa College ground.

Sachin Khurana struck a fine half century off just 39 balls to help Young Friends win. He was adjudged the man of the match.

Young Friends won the toss and opted to field. The FCI batsmen collapsed in the face of hostile pace and spin bowling by Young Friends to crash for 124 runs. Only Sanjeev Kohli and Shakti Singh put up some resistance and helped FCI cross the 100-run mark. Medium pacer Ashok Maurya too two wickets and off-spinner Puru Singh claimed three wickets for 24 runs off eight overs. Left-arm spinner Tarun Dutta took two wickets for 19 runs off 5.1 overs.

In reply, Young Friends knocked up the required runs for victory in just 26.1 overs. Sachin Khurana’s rapidfire knock of 50 with eight fours and one six was the highlight of the match. Yoginder Negi remained not out on 33 while T.Anand made an unbeaten 36.

Young Friends will take on defending champions Indian Airlines on Thursday.

Shalaj Sondhi bowls Saviour Convent to victory

New Delhi, May 15
A remarkable bowling spell of 5 for 21 by Shalaj Sondhi enabled Saviour Convent School beat hosts Ravinder Public School by nine wickets and enter the quarter-final of the Ravinder Malhotra Memorial Under-15 Inter-School Cricket Tournament in the Capital on Wednesday.

Shalaj Sondhi was declared the man of the match, and the award was given away by Pramod D Jain.

Earlier, the match was inaugurated by local MLA Shadi Ram. Chairman of the tournament organising committee Sanjeev Malhotra, Mr Vinod Goel and Mr Praveen Jain were also present on the occasion.

Batting first, Ravinder Public School were all out for 183 in 39.3 overs, thanks to the piercing bowling of right-arm off-spinner Shalaj Sondhi.

In reply, Saviour Convent School easily reached the winning target, scoring 186 for the loss of one wicket in 29.4 overs. Raman Gujral played a brilliant knock of 88, which included eleven boundaries.

Scores: Ravinder Public School: 183 all out (Hemant Singh 40, Gaurav Rohilla 30, Shalaj Sondhi 5 for 21, Sandeep Chandhok 2 for 31).

Saviour Convent School: 186 for 1 (Raman Gujral 88 n.o., Bhupender Wlingwal 64, Virat Kohli 17 n.o).

Roshanara Club cricket camp begins

New Delhi, May 15
Former Indian Test opener Chetan Chauhan, who is also the senior vice-president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), inaugurated the Roshanara Summer Cricket Coaching Camp at the Roshanara Club ground.

Chauhan appreciated the efforts of the Roshanara Club in fostering cricket activity and hoped that the club would produce cricketers of outstanding calibre in the near future.

Chairman of the cricket sub-committee of the club Satish Babbar announced that the Roshanara Club would organise a cricket tournament in December this year. He said reputed teams from all over the country will participate in the tournament.

Mr Babbar said a tournament for juniors would also be organised. Others who were present at the cricket camp opening were vice-president of Roshanara Club Arun Chopra, treasurer S.P.Arora and secretary of the cricket sub-committee S.S.Tulsi.

Balbir lifts gold in World Cadet Boxing

New Delhi, May 15
The seven-member Indian boxing team won a gold and a silver medal in the second World Cadet Boxing Championship held at Budapest in Hungary from May 3 to 13. Three of the Indian boxers qualified for the quarter-finals. Balbir Singh, Sports Authority of India’s STC-Delhi scheme product, won the gold in the 48kg, when he outwitted his Hungarian rival. The 15-year-old Balbir has been participating in the National Boxing Championship since 1998, and has been the ‘best boxer’ in the Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship in 1999 and the All-India YMCA Boxing Championship in 2001.He won a gold medal in the International Boxing Championship held in Germany in 2001 and was adjudged the best boxer too. Balbir is being trained by SAI coaches S.R.Singh and Ajmer Singh. Sanjay Kolte, who also boxed brilliantly to reach the final, however, lost to his Russian opponent and had to settle for the silver medal. Sanjay Kolte is a trainee of the Army Sports Institute at Pune. Coaches M.Veenu and M.S.Dhaka accompanied the India squad. OSR

Apoorv Vij storms into semi-final

New Delhi, May 15
Apoorv Vij beat Ujjawal Kharbana 7-0,7-1 to breeze into the under-19 boys semi-final of the 13th Pt.Tirth Ram Memorial Badminton Tournament being played at the New Era Public School ground. Apoorv Vij beat Harpreet Singh 7-2,7-3 on way to the quarter-final.

In other matches in the under-19 quarter-finals, Parminder Kumar beat Harpreet 7-3,7-3, Himanshu Kharbanda beat Sunil Nain 8-6,7-4 and Vikas Sharma beat Divesh 7-1,7-2. In the pre-quarter-finals, Ujjawal Kharbanda beat Gagan Preet 4-7,7-3,7-1, Vikas Sharma beat Anil Sharma 7-2,7-4 and Himanshu Kharbanda beat Parminder 3-7,7-3,7-1. In the under-19 girls section, Meenakshi beat Chitralekha 5-7,7-4,7-2, Shradha Chhabra beat Vanshika 7-0,7-3, Divya Arora beat Rashmi 7-5,3-7, 7-5 and Mohita beat Neetu Singh 7-1,8-6. Kulvinder hits century for DTC

Kulvinder Singh hit a fine unbeaten 128 with 14 fours and four sixes to help Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) beat Patel Nagar Gymkhana by 132 runs in a B Division match of the DDCA League at the University ground.

Scores: DTC: 230 for 5 in 40 overs (Kulvinder Singh 128 n.o., Mahesh Sharma 54, Hardeep Singh 4 for 26). Patel Nagar Gymkhana: 98 all out in 26.5 overs (Sandeep Dahiya 25, Dalip Kumar 3 for 27, Mahesh Sharma 2 for 15).

Citizen Club beat Delhi Club by four wickets in a B Division match at the DAV College ground. Scores: Delhi Club: 154 all out in 33.3 overs (Javed Choudhary 49, Sumit Dogra 4 for 33, Sachin Chaudhary 3 for 15, Antriksh Singh 2 for 30). Citizen Club: 156 for 6 in 29.3 overs (Aditya Aima 73,Aman Arora 28 n.o., Amit Chaudhary 2 for 30).

11 panels to review cases of pension schemes

Rewari, May 15
As many as 11 official panels have been constituted in Rewari district which would identify new eligible beneficiaries as well as review the cases of old beneficiaries of “Tau Devi Lal Old Age Pension Scheme” from May 27 in the district, according to Mr Vineet Garg, Deputy Commissioner, Rewari. He said that each panel would comprise a tehsildar /niab tehsildar, a medical officer and a representative of the office of the district social welfare officer.

Besides, the two sub-divisional officers of Rewari and Kosli as well as the district development and panchayat officer had also been deputed to see to it that the above panels functioned smoothly and then submitted reports which were precise. He said that nine of these panels would function in the villages while the remaining two would remain confined to the urban areas.

Videography to keep tabs on mining

Faridabad: After the ban imposed of mining activities on 5 km radius from Delhi border by the Supreme Court, the district administration has taken up videography of the mining areas and pits to check any violation of the order.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar said that the work was near completion and it would provide a benchmark. Meanwhile, complaints about removal of sandstone and Badarpur material from some mines by workers of an influential politician have poured in. It is alleged that despite the court order, some trucks have taken out the material illegally.
