Mobilise
funds for sports: Gurbir Chandigarh, May 15 Gurbir, an Arjuna awardee, cited the example of Chinas’ whose annual sports budget is many times that of India. He said unless we make a determined effort to raise resources, we cannot hope to attain proficiency in sports. It may be recalled that Gurbir, a former international shooter along with Raja KS Sidhu, Secretary PRSA, were instrumental in giving a new shooting range to this region at SAS Nagar when the 31st National Games were held in last November, 2001. It who completed in record time of around four months and that too for both air weapons and clay pigeon events. Gurbir Singh said in the past, local-level administrators were given powers to raise funds for sports. However, during the past few years, this practice has been stopped. He said local administrators have the best of influence and could always help the associations and other sports bodies in generating money. He said Punjab must avail the benefits of various schemes launched by the Sports Authority of India, that include providing of infrastructure, coaches and also funds. He also suggested to channelise money through NRIs as many of them were former sportspersons and wanted to invest in sports so that they could visualise India doing well in sports in the international arena. He requested former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India I.S. Bindra to help other games along with cricket. He gave the suggestion to hold a celebrity cricket match once a year where the profit part could be donated for the cause of sports in the state. He corroborated the suggestion given by Mr TC Gupta president, Punjab Judo Association, to identify five or six “golden sportspersons” who could be potential medal winners in the next five years so that maximum resources could be invested in them so as to yield optimum results. The seminar was organised at the PCA Stadium in SAS Nagar. |

MC rejects PUDA’s offer SAS Nagar, May 15 Rejecting the offer, the general house of the council at a meeting held here said it was the responsibility of PUDA to provide essential facilities such a community centres, schools, a cremation ground, a cattle pound etc. The cost of such facilities and services was included in that of the plots allotted by PUDA in the town. The council president, Mr Kulwant Singh, said PUDA had agreed in November last year to give two acres for the cattle pound on a cost basis if the council deposited Rs 1 lakh as token money. On December 21 the token money was deposited. However, in a letter of May 2 this year PUDA said the land would be allotted at the rate of Rs 1,758 per sq yd, with the total cost coming to Rs 1,70,17,440. The council was also asked to deposit 25 per cent of the amount (Rs 42,54,360) within 60 days. The land rate fixed by PUDA was exorbitant and the council would seek refund of the token money of Rs 1 lakh. The financial position of the council was poor, he said. The meeting also cleared a proposal to get the foundation stone of the council office building in Sector 68 laid by a VIP. A sum of Rs 1.50 lakh is proposed to be spent on the function. The council also took up the problem of consumers installing pump sets direct on the water pipeline in Phases VI to IX industrial area. This adversely affected the water pressure. Consumers on the upper floors were the main sufferers. The council decided to impose a
penalty of Rs 1,000 on defaulters. If the pump set was not removed, it would be seized. If the offence was repeated, the water connection of the consumers concerned would be cut. Councillors complained that the water supply was unsatisfactory in parts of the town. Mr Sham Bansal, who lives in Phase I, said the water pressure had been inadequate even at the ground floor level for the past 10 days. The council president, in reply to the councillors, said the Department of Public Health, which was supplying water, had claimed that there was no shortage of water. According to department officials, under the norms the water requirement was 45 gallons per persons per day while the availability in the town was 100 gallons. The president said this clearly showed that the water system being run by Public Health officials was defective. Mr Kulwant Singh said the water supply network should be handed over to the council which would ensure better service to the consumers. Besides, the civic body would save Rs 1 crore annually under such as arrangement. The meeting also cleared a proposal on additional staff for the work of octroi collection. The president said such staff would be kept on contract basis. |
