Honour for PGI prof

The rare honour given to Professor R.C. Mahajan, emeritus professor, PGI, by the Council of Third World Academy of Sciences has brought laurels not only to his contribution towards science and its development in the Third World, but also recognition to the efforts made by the scientists of the country.

Professor Mahajan, adviser, parasitology Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), has been doing research on tropical diseases for the past 35 years. He is the only person in the Third World to have received a fellowship by the Council of TWAS this year in the field of medical sciences. “Being recognised at the international level is , an honour, not only for me, but for our country as well “, he says.

The letter from the Executive Director of TWAC, Mr Mohamed H.A. Hasan, Trieste, Italy, says his TWAS membership is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to science and its development in the Third World. He will be granted the fellowship at the sixth general assembly meeting of TWAS in New Delhi in October this year.

“We are constantly working towards finding better ways for development of vaccines for the treatment of diarrhoeal diseases, apart from their prevention and control”, he says, “The magnitude of the problem caused by these diseases can be well imagined by the fact that our country has three million malaria cases every year and 25 per cent of deaths in children are due to diarrhoeal diseases, he added “.

Professor Mahajan has more than 400 publications to his credit. He opines that there is no dearth of talent in the country when it comes to research and even the facilities available here are at par with international standards.

Doctor launches website

Nurses’ panel holds discussion

A panel discussion on ‘Menopause — fears and facts’ was organised by the Trained Nurses Association of India, Chandigarh, on the occasion of nurses week celebrations at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here today.

Prof Raj Bahadur, orthopaedic surgeon, while talking about osteoporosis, spoke about the difference in Type I osteoporosis, which occurs mainly in post-menopausal stage, and Type II osteoporosis which occurs in old age. He also discussed the bone changes due to osteoporosis leading to increased susceptibility to fractures and the role of calcium and Vitamin D supplementation and the need of regular exercise in pre and post menopausal age.

Dr Poonam Goyal spoke about the gynaecological problems related to menopause like dysfunctional uterine bleeding, fibroid, urethral and vaginal narrowing etc. Dr Sanjay Badhada explained the role of hormones and effect of menopause on the body system with special emphasis on lipids and cardio-vascular system. Dr B S Chavan addressed the issue of psychological effects of the problem.

Around 100 delegates from three government hospitals of the city, Inscol, CMC and Fortis attended the panel discussion. Prof SBS Mann, Director Principal, GMCH-32, was the guest of honour.

Aldo training skaters in basics

It was the training of a different kind in the evening hours at the skating rink in Kailash Bahl DAV Centenary School, Sector 7. The occasion was the national roller hockey team camp at which men and women were undergoing practice session from none other than world-renowned roller hockey coach Baraldi Aldo from Italy. A total of 18 men and 17 women are attending the camp arranged at the initiative of the Roller Skating Federation of India. The local co-ordinator of the camp and Principal of the host school, Ms Madhu Bahl, said the camp had begun on April 25. She said earlier the camp was planned for 10 days only, but when the president of the RSFI, Mr Pradeep Ganeriwal, visited the school on May 8, he announced its extension upto May 23 for providing better training to Indian skaters. She said the budding city skaters were fortunate enough to have national roller skaters around who would motivate these skaters to learn and achieve more.

Later, Baraldi Aldo said he was concentrating on improving the fundamentals of the skaters. He said though the skaters were not able to understand the whole of what he said, yet they learnt through his body language and rectified their mistakes. The local coach, Harpreet Singh, also helped bridging the gap between Aldo and the skaters. It may be recalled that Aldo, now on a second visit to India, is an authority in roller hockey and has steered Italy to become a world beater in this event.

Mr Ganeriwial said Aldo had charged Rs 10000 per day on his first visit in 1999 but this time, he had agreed to RSFI’s request and was charging very less.

The probables comprise many international skaters. One of them is Meenakshi Kohli of Haryana, who was given the best fighter award at the Asian skating meet held in Shanghai (China) in 1999. Other top-class girl skaters are Amrita Singh also of Haryana , Rayasha Rajput, Anuja and Chandita Kamboj who is only 12.

The other women probables attending the camp are Heena Bharti, Ritika Sharma, Heena Ahuja, Divya, Amola, Anuja, Suruchi Chandel, Japneet, Manvi, Pooja Langar, Surbhi, Karishma Ahuja, Priyanka Sharma and Kriti Puri.

The boys include Rajesh Anand of Jammu and Kashmir Police, prominent skater Ankush Kohli, Anil Dev Singh, A. Goel, Parminder Kamboj, Rohit Randhawa, Arun, Jaswinder Singh, Mukul Sahil, Sudhir Arora, Abhishek, Navdeep Puri, Sandeep Anwar, Gautam, Sarabjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Amandeep Singh.

Inter-area handball meet concludes

Chandigarh Area went down, fighting to Jammu and Udhampur Area 11-20 in the final of the Western Air Command Inter-Area Handball Championships, which concluded at 12 Wing AF, here this evening. The half-time score remained 10-3 in favour of the winners. Sgt R.K. Sharma and Cpl Anil Kumar scored seven goals each, Cpl S.P. Singh and Fg Officer Kushalippa scored two goals each for the winners. JWO S.Singh scored five goals, while Cpl R. Singh three and Sgt B.S. Bist, Cpl Ramakrishan and MWO R. Singh scored one goal each for losers.

Air Cmde V.S. Govindrajan VM, Air officer commanding, Air Force Station, Chandigarh, was the chief guest.

Snooker meet

Anandit Joshi and Sandeep Chadha bagged the snooker and billiards titles, respectively, of the third Saurabh Khattar Memorial Snooker Meet as well as the Shekhar Puri memorial Billiards Meet, which concluded at the Chandigarh Club on Monday. In snooker final, A.Joshi defeated Sandeep Chadha 21-52, 30-58, 52-44,70-24,74-38 and 89-7. In billiards final, S Chadha overpowered Suresh Chaudhary 301-283.

Annual sports meet

The annual school sports competitions will begin with the Pre-Subroto Mukerjee Cup Football Tournament for sub-juniors (11 to 14 years) and juniors (15 to 17 years) from July 23 to 25. The state-level competitions in swimming, carrom, judo, roller skating in the girls’ section in age groups below 14,17 and 19 will be held on August 22 and 23. The boys’ competitions in wrestling, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, carrom, judo and roller skating will be organised from August 26 to 28.

Pre-Nehru hockey for boys (below 15, 17), lawn tennis, badminton, table tennis, yoga, archery, ball badminton (below 14,17 and 19) will be held from September 16 to 19. The girls’ competitions will be held from September 23 to 25.

The events to be held in October include basketball, handball, hockey, kabaddi, circle kabaddi, volleyball, kho-kho and softball, archery for under-14,17 and 19 in both boys and girls’ sections. Football boys under-14,17 and 19 and for girls in below-19 section will be held from October 8 to 11 and October 15 to 17, respectively.

The cricket (boys) in under-14,16 and 19; cricket (girls) in under-19; karate, fencing, throwball (boys and girls) in under-14,17 and 19; ball badminton in below-14, 17 and 19 will be held in November.

Football camp at school

Football activities have become synonymous with Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, where the emphasis is being laid on below-12 and below-19 sections.

During a visit to the school nearly 16 boys all between the age group 13 and 14 were going through strenuous exercises as a part of the summer camp under the guidance of Ranjit Rana.

According to Mr T.R. Sethi, Chairman of the school, Rs 20 lakh will be spent on the sports during this session. He said 50 students were adopted by the school on the basis of their potential and they were given all facilities.

He said two football players of the school namely Chetan Thakur and Kaghudhomain were selected in the Indian school team for the Asian School Football Meet to be held in Bangkok. Apart from that, the school also won the State Sub-Junior Football Meet for under-16 section last year, then the Sanjay Trophy and SD Trophy also lifted by the school. It also won the Pre-Subroto Mukerjee Football Tournament held last year; and the CBSE Cluster XI North Zone Meet held in October. He said in hockey also it remained runner up in the National CBSE Hockey Meet held at Jalandhar in below-19 section. In cricket the school was runner up in the Shivalik Cricket trophy and runner up in the State Judo Meet in below-17 and 19 section.

Mr Sethi said in their SAS Nagar branch, in Sector 70, a hall is coming up with indoor sports facilities. The Panchkula branch will be equipped with tennis facilities.

Two DSPs, 7 inspectors shifted

Chandigarh, May 13
The Chandigarh Administration today transferred two Deputy Superintendents of Police, while the Chandigarh Police, in a separate order, transferred seven inspectors, including three Station House Officers.

Mr S.C. Abrol, DSP (Crime Branch) has been posted as Officer on Special Duty, Vigilance Cell, Chandigarh Administration. His place will be taken by Mr Asa Nand, DSP (PCR). Mr Nand will also hold the additional charge of the PCR. The transfers are with immediate effect. Mr Arjan Singh Jaggi, Inspector posted as Officer on Special Duty, Vigilance Cell, has been relieved of the post.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr B.S Bassi today issued transfer orders of seven inspectors. Positions of Mr Ashwani Kumar, SHO of the Sector 19 police station, and Mr Sandal Singh, in charge of the traffic wing, have been swapped. Mr KIP Singh will be the new SHO of the Sector 39 police station. He is being replaced by Mr Mani Ram who was earlier in charge of the Economic Offence Wing of the UT Police. Mr Mani Ram has been replaced by Mr Moti Ram, who till date was in charge of the VIP security. Mr Kultar Singh Khalon, SHO of the Sector 39 police station, has been given the charge of the VIP security.

Mr Bakshir Singh, of the traffic wing, will now be in charge of the Public Grievance cell of the police. Mr Inderjeet Singh, who was earlier in charge of the PG cell, will be going to Bosnia on special duty.
