Meat shops to be shifted to new market
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, May 12
The Sonepat Municipal Council has decided to shift all the meat shops from the city areas to the meat market near the slaughterhouse along Drain No. 6 on the Ambala Road.

Giving this information, Mr Y. S. Gupta, Executive Officer of the municipal council, told mediapersons here today that the council had convened a special meeting of the unlicensed meat shopkeepers and they were informed about the directive issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Haryana Municipal (Regulation of Slaughter Housing) Act 1973 on the issue. They were also told that they should seek licences before the sale of meat and slaughter of animals.

He disclosed that the council would issue necessary licences within the period of three months to the shopkeepers selling meat and they should open their shops near the new slaughterhouse situated along Drain no 6 on the Ambala road.

Mr Gupta also disclosed that the council had also issued temporary licences to at least 12 meat sellers: Mr Shyam, Mr Parkash, Mr Ram Kumar, Mr Nem Chand, Mr Bijender, Mr Ashok, Mr Bhim Singh, Mr Ram Kumar, Mr Nahnu, Mr Gopal, Mr Alisher and Mr Ram Mehar.

He warned that the violation of the order issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court would attract legal action against the sellers of meat. He appealed to all the meat sellers to seek licences by May 14 positively. According to Mr Gupta, the municipal council had already received a grant of Rs 7.10 lakh from the state government for the construction of a modern slaughterhouse in the city. As many as 14 shops would be constructed and these would be auctioned to sellers.

The state government, it may be recalled, has allocated Rs 2.42 crore for the construction of modern slaughterhouses within the jurisdiction of the civic bodies in the state during the current financial year. This step has been taken to check the illegal sale of meat by the shopkeepers.
