R R Gymkhana lift Gyan Prakash cricket title New Delhi, May 6 Sonnet Club, batting first, folded up for 158 all out in 39.5 overs. The saving grace of their innings was a fine 63 by Mayank Sidana. Rohtak Road Gymkhana, in reply, were in dire straight when they lost three wickets for just ten runs. But a 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Bhagat Singh and K Bhatia helped R R Gymkhana coast to 159 for eight in 39.2 overs with Praghat Singh scoring 42, and Hemant Bansal remaining not out on 29. Narender Singh was adjudged the man of the match for his all-round performance. Aditya Jain of Madan Lal Academy was declared the man of the tournament. Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) sports secretary Sunil Dev, who was the chief guest at the final, gave away the prizes. Former Test player and current national selector Madan Lal said from next year, the matches will be two-day affairs as one-day matches were not good for the full development of the players. Scores: Sonnet Club: 158 all out in 39.5 overs (Mayank Sidana 63, Harish Kumar 22, Karan Harit 20, Narender Singh 3 for 29, Ankur Garg 2 for 26). Karun Chandhok scores British F 3 podium New Delhi, May 6 The 18-year-old JK Tyre-sponsored athlete finished second in just his fifth race in the prestigious category, putting his hope of finishing in the top three in the British Championship firmly on track. Karun was confident of a good result after a very good test session at the 3.7 mile circuit the week before but didn’t have a very good time in the two qualifying sessions held on Friday and Saturday. Karun spun off after struggling with an imbalance in the car, which resulted in his worst qualifying position ever—8th. In the second qualifying race, Chandhok found a full one second but climbed up to seventh position showing just how competitive the series is. Karun made a spectacular start to the first race and passed four cars on the first lap. When others collided and chaos prevailed in front of him, Karun avoided the mayhem to move up to the second place and stayed there till the end of the race. An elated Karun said: “Finishing second so early in the year is just amazing for me. We’ve had some very hard days thus far and were not too happy with my qualifying performances. But today, it all came good and I’m really happy. I don’t think any other Indian has finished on the podium so early in his F3 career. I would really like to thank everyone at T-Sport, Neil Brown Engineering, who have done a top job so far”. The second race also went well for Karun and he contended with understeer and rising engine temperature to climb up to fifth position. These results have moved Karun up from third to fifth in the championship standings with 47 points. His next race is scheduled at Knockhill Track on May 11-12. |
Naren finishes with
championship point in New Delhi, May 6 On a day strewn with retirements as battered cars withdrew in heaps from what is one of the most challenging rallies on the circuit, Naren found himself in a chance with earning as much as four championship points if he could finish the rally. Unfortunately, on SS16, the Indian broke his Mitsubshi Lancer Evo VII’s driveshaft when he hit a stone on the middle of the path. “I wasn’t expecting it. It was a blind crest and I saw it only after jumping over it”, said a disappointed Naren. The other MRF driver, Arjun Balu, finished the longest leg of the event without any major hiccups. Co-driver Darryl Judd was more comfortable with the pace notes and the duo worked in tandem for the Indian to clock some more miles on the car. “I am more comfortable driving the four-wheel drive rally car to a two-wheel drive so I am pretty pleased with it”, said Arjun. “If not for the turbo problem on day one, which forced me to retire, it would have been interesting to see where I could have finished”, he added. Australian Ed Ordynski posted a comfortable four-minute victory after arch-rival Possum Bourne retired with a gearbox failure. Mitsubishis made a clean sweep of the overall podium with fourth place for Martin Lintott in a non-factory impreza being the best result for Subaru. For MRF, the event has been a good learning experience. Naren did finish with a bonus point for the third fastest time on day one and currently lies sixth in the Group N Championship. Italian Nico Cladarola leads the Group N Championship with 15 points with New Zealand’s Possum Bourne in second (six points) and Reece Jones in third (five points). While the next round is scheduled for New Caledonia in May, MRF will skip it and concentrate on the next round in New Zealand from June 28 to 30. Naren Kumar had gone well-prepared, but the unfamiliar treacherous track put paid to his hopes, though the talented driver has not lost all hope, as he is determined to do well in the other coming events. |
Sunil Sudan’s century for CWC
goes in vain New Delhi, May 6 Though his century could not help CWC win the match, Sunil Sudan earned the man of the match award from veteran coach Virender Bhatnagar. CWC skipper Rajiv Vinayak won the toss and put the Haryana team into bat. Though Haryana lost two early wickets, for the addition of just 27 runs, the fine knocks of Darminder Phagne and Mahesh Rawat, who both slammed half centuries, and the unbeaten 40 by Parveen Thapar helped them reach a respectable total of 232 for 5 in 40 overs. CWC, in reply, began disastrously losing five wickets for 77 runs. Sunil Sudan, who bravely tried to stem the rot with a swashbuckling knock, could not realise his dream of helping his team win, as he fell the ninth victim, with CWC still needing 12 runs to overhaul Faridabad’s total. In fact, at the 30-over marh, CWC were far ahead, 152 for 7 compared to Faridabad’s 127 for 4, but one the home stretch they failed to maintain momentum and lost out.
