New Delhi, May 6
A film that sheds light on the apologetic state of education in the country and reinforces the belief that education is not a top priority in the country was screened here today.

The film, titled ‘Education: A myth or a reality’, has been shot extensively across the country and captures the reality that education continues to be neglected in spite of the severe need to spearhead it as a movement.

The 30-minute documentary encompasses the reality that has been there for decades. Education has failed to get the priority it deserves. The film that begins at a rally that took place in the Capital in November last year where thousands of people gathered to demand education as a fundamental right touches the ground reality. Focusing on the role played by the voluntary agencies, the film highlights the fact that education is still a distant dream for most in India.

The director, Madhurita Anand Negi, said, “This is the first time that the grassroots situation has been revealed. This is the real picture, not an academic government report. We hope it will invoke the idealist in the viewer.”

Speaking at the screening Prof Yashpal, who was also the chief guest, said that India could make atom bombs and even the most sophisticated machinery, yet the easiest thing is almost impossible. He was referring to the inability to provide education. “I am just not satisfied, the general quality of education is inversely proportional to the number of public schools in the country. In spite of the universalisation of education, the discriminated continue to be discriminated. Education has to be the first priority,” he said.

The film was screened by the National Alliance For the Fundamental Right to Education (NAFRE) at a function held to inaugurate its website here today. The national convenor of NAFRE, Sanjiv Kaura, said, “In one stroke, education of the masses can bring accountability and attitudinal issues to the forefront. Accountability issues on the polity are well known. Attitudinal issues are all too apparent in Gujarat. How can this change? We at NAFRE believe that education is the ultimate empowerment tool for making a humane and enlightened society”.
