Dev Dildar enchants audience

“I did take out an album of pop songs in the past. Looking back, I think it was a ‘paap’ album”, said singer Dev Dildar.” I will never again sing ‘pop songs’ as I want to promote Punjabi and Punjabiyat,.” he said.

Connoisseurs of music had a delightful evening yesterday. Dev Dildar, sang Punjabi geet, ghazals and Sufiana songs which created an ambiance that kept the listeners riveted to their seats. The function was held in Punjabi Bhavan and was organised by the Punjabi Sahit Akademi.

This was the inaugural programme of ‘musical evenings’ to be organised by the Akademi. Every first Saturday of the month, the Akademi would invite some eminent singers who would sing folk songs. “The aim is to give encouragement to Punjabi poetry” said Surjit Patar, presdent of the Akademi.

Dev Dildar sang sing Surjit Patar’s poem ‘Jaga de mombattian’ in a very soulful voice. The audience developed instant rapport with the singer and encouraged him by applauding. The next song was a Sufiana song written by Bulle Shah. The song was ‘Bulle nu samjhavan ayeen behan te bharjaian’. Sambhav, an NGO had got a cassette of Dev Dildar released recently. Its songs deal with the concern for environment. Dev sang ‘Poore karne je sohaniya jeewaon da cha’. from that album.

He was accompanied by his sons on the Tabla and synthesiser by his sons. They assisted him ably.

Eyes donated

Relatives of Sagar Singh, a resident of Bhanohar village, donated his eyes to Eye Bank Mansuran, after the latter’s sudden demise.

Dr Ramesh, director, Eye Bank Mansuran, in a press statement today said that the relatives of Sagar Singh were motivated by Mr Balwinder Singh Bhattal, a social worker, posted at the SSP office in Ludhiana.

Both corneas were transplanted into two needy patients, hailing from Kapurthala and Ludhiana districts, respectively.

Dr Ramesh said that Sagar Singh was an ex-serviceman and was serving at a village school.

Souvenir released, turf wicket inaugurated

A souvenir in connection with the Duleep Trophy one-day cricket match between North Zone and East Zone, organised by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) under the aegis of the Punjab Cricket Association at the Punjab Agricultural University ground in February, was released at a function held today at the Arya College for Boys ground.

The Additional District and Session Judge, Mr B.K. Mehta, and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (East), Mr Kuldeep Singh, jointly released the souvenir. Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, chairman, Selection Committee, Punjab, Mr Charanjit Singh, life president, LDCA, and other office-bearers of the association, former Punjab Ranji players, Lokesh Khanna, Arun Passi, Satish Mangal and Rakesh Saini, and parents of some players were also present on this occasion.

Later, a turf wicket constructed at the ground was declared functional. International cricket coach and senior sports officer of the Punjab Sports Department, Mr Charanjit Singh Saini, performed ‘bhoomi pujan’. A ‘langar’ was also organised by the LDCA outside the college.

This was followed by a match (under-16) between the Ludhiana XI and the Moga XI. The hosts scored a thrilling one-wicket victory in the match. Yogesh scored 60 for the winners.

Batting first after winning the toss, the Moga XI scored 193 runs in their stipulated 35 overs. Prashant top scored with 61 runs, followed by Sanjay who contributed 34. For Ludhiana team, Sushayant Kohli and Gurmeet Singh grabbed four wickets each conceding 35 and 14 runs, respectively.

The Ludhiana XI began their chase on a dismal note. They lost three wickets for just 23 runs. Then Vishal Joshi and Yogesh took control of the proceedings. Yogesh played a whirlwind innings of 60 runs. He reached the half century mark off just 22 deliveries. He hit five sixes and one boundary in one over. Vishal scored 47 runs.

The hosts scored the required runs in 28.5 overs after losing 9 wickets.

Brief scores: Moga XI — 193 all-out (Prashant 61, Sanjay 34, Tanvir 21, Sukhdeep 21, Sushyant Kohli 4 for 35, Gurmeet Singh 4 for 14 and Nakul Sharma 2 for 32).

Ludhiana XI — 196 runs (Vishal Joshi 47, Yogesh 60, Tarun Passi 17, Ganbir 2 for 23, Sukhdeep 2 for 12, Jimmy 2 for 14 and Harpreet 2 for 10).

Belt grading tests: As many as 2,148 students drawn from seven schools of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir took part in a grade-promotion test conducted by the Centre for Advanced Martial Art Training (CAMAT).

In the final round held at the Sacred Heart Convent School, Urban Estate, here on Sunday, 511 students qualified for black belts. These trainees were also awarded ‘belt of proficiency’ certificates.

Green and blue belts were given to two students while 303 students were awarded green belts, 176 were given yellow-green belts and 30 students got yellow belts. Mr Pradeep Sharma, a black belt and degree holder from France, examined the trainees. Other members of the panel included Mr Om Parkash Verma, Mr Parvinder Kumar, Mr Rahul and Mr Rishi.

The district police authorities have reshuffled a number of Station House Officers (SHOs) in the district.

The Sub-Inspector, Mr Randhir Singh, has been posted as SHO, Sahnewal; the Inspector, Mr Warryam Singh, is the SHO, Salem Tabri; Mr Gurpreet Singh is in charge, CIA-2; Mr Nirmal Singh is the SHO, Basti Jodhewal; Mr Jaswinder Singh is the SHO, Sarabha Nagar; Mr Shankar Dass is the SHO, Division No. 5.
