Mustafa Ghouse leads the seeded pack in New Delhi, April 28 Manoj Mahadevan has been seeded fifth while Nitin Kirtane gets the third slot, behind Tomer Suissa of Israel, seeded second. Eliran Dooyev of Israel has been seeded fourth while Hayato Furukawa of Japan, Ivan Syro and Gjunior Ghendina of Germany have been given the lower seedings in that order. Eighteen Indian players figure in the main draw of 32. While four Indians have got through Wild Card—Anant Sitaram, Nipun Gupta, Nishank Mishra and Vishal Punna — four made it through the qualifying route. They are Sandeep Kirtane, Rohan Gajjar, Somdev K Dev Verman and Ravikrishna
Palivela. Sandeep Kirtane beat Divij Sharan of India 6-1,6-1 in the final qualifying round match while Rohan Gajjan put paid to the hopes of Ashutosh Singh 6-2,6-4. Ravikrishna Palivla beat Dhananjay Kawade 6-2, 6-4 and Somdev Dev Verman beat Anjan Viplap 6-3, 6-2 in other qualifying matches. Among the promising Indian players who failed to make the cut were Ajay Chowdapalli, Vivek Satyajit, Vishal Gupta, Gurmehr Singh and Jaco T Mathew. Salwan annex cricket title New Delhi, April 28 In a totally lop-sided title clash, Salwan Boys played like champions to skittle out Hans Raj Model School for 122 for 9 in 40 overs. Hans Raj opted to bat after winning the toss, and it proved to be a suicidal decision. Skipper Narender Singh scalped four wickets to bag the man of the match as well as the best bowler awards. Salwan Boys reached the winning target, losing just one wicket, that of Ratan Rawat, for 29. Rawat was named the man of the series. Rachit Kapoor of Hans Raj School got the best batsman of the tournament award. After Rawat’s exit, Gaurav Sharma and Gaurav Chabra were locked in an unbroken partnership to remain 62 not out and 25 not out respectively. AAFI calendar begins with Circuit Meet in Delhi New Delhi, April 28 The second Circuit Meet will be held in Bangalore on May 5 and the third Circuit Meet on May 7 in Chennai. The National Inter-State Senior Athletic Meet will be held in Bangalore from June 1 to 3, while the Federation Cup Athletic Meet for seniors will be held in Chennai from June 24 to 27. The Federation Cup will be the final selection trials for the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Track and Field meet, the Asian Games and World Junior Athletic Championships. The North Zone Athletic Championship will be held at Meerut (UP) on August 23 and 24, the South Zone Junior Athletic Meet at Thiruvanathapuram (Kerala) on August 24 and 25, the East Zone Junior Athletic Meet at Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) on August 19 and 20 and the West Zone Junior Athletic Meet at Satna (Madhya Pradesh) on August 20 and 21. The fourth National Athletic Circuit Meet will be held in Delhi on August 26 while the fifth National Athletic Circuit Meet will be held at Jalandhar on August 28. Delhi will also play host to the National Open Athletic Meet from September 7 to 9, which will also be the confirmatory trials for the Asian Games. The National Inter-Zonal Junior Athletic Meet will be held in Kolkata from September 16 to 18 and the National Junior Federation Cup Meet in Mumbai on October 3 and 4. The Mumbai meet will also be the selection trials for the Asian Junior Athletic Championships. The National Under-22 Athleti Meet will be held in Chandigarh on November 11 and 12 while the National Inter-State Junior Athletic Meet will be held at Shimoga in Karnataka from January 7 to 11, 2003. The National Cross Country Meet will be held in Goa on February 2, 2003 and the Federation Cup Cross Country at Meerut on March 2, 2003. The Thane Varsha Marathon will be held at Thane in Maharashtra on July 14, 2002, the Tata Steel Half Marathon at Jamshedpur on July 29, the Travancore Marathon at Thiruvanathapuram on August 9, the Chennai Marathon on November 2, the Salwan Mini Marathon in Delhi on November 3 and the Indira Marathon in Allahabad (UP) on November 19. The Pune International Marathon will be held on December 15, and the All-India Road Races at Bangalore on June 2. The National Walking Championships will be held at Pune on December 6 and 7. |
AAFI engages nine foreign coaches New Delhi, April 28 Three new foreign coaches have been engaged in addition to the existing six foreign coaches. Volodymyr Hudilin will be inchare of the hammer throw event for men and women, Anatoly Fatyeyev for combined events and Belski Victor for Horizontal Jumps. The other foreign coaches/masseurs, who had already been engaged, are Yuriy Ogorodnik for sprints and hurdles, Viktor Omelchenko for jevelin throw, Yurity Minakov for shot put and discus, Uladzimir Polahau for middle and long distance, Inna Zavereva as masseur for women and Sergiy
The foreign coaches have been engaged at considerable cost in a bid to extract better performances from the athletes in international competitions, including the Asian Games, for India to make some impact as a power to reckon with. But the point is, will the engagement of so many foreign coaches deliver the desired results? The coming months will give the answer. |

Vishal helps Brighto Club enter final New Delhi, April 28 The restrictive, and productive bowling of K S Rana and Raju Grewal put shackles on Sonnet's batsmen, though Devender Sharma posted a fine half century to give some solidity to the Sonnet total. In reply, Brighto Club, helped Brigto unbeaten 73 by Vishal Sharma, raced to 192 for 4 in 38.4 overs. His match-winning knock came from the quickfire knock of 73. Putting posters on walls may land you in jail New Delhi, April 28 Urban Development Minister A K Walia’s instructions to the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Public Works Department (PWD) also include a directive to lodge First Information Reports (FIRs) against those whose posters or publicity materials are found to be put up on the roads and walls. The directive was issued after the minister visited certain roads in Timarpur, Model Town, Azadpur vegetable market, Adarsh Nagar, Pitampura, Saraswati Vihar, Sainik Vihar and Shakurpur resettlement colony in north Delhi on Saturday. The minister said that the West Bengal Prevention of Defacement of Property Act 1976 was in force in Delhi under which damage to property caused by any kind of publicity material shall invite a fine of up to Rs 1,000 or imprisonment up to six months or both. |
