Summer diseases on the rise in Faridabad
Bijendra Ahlawat
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, April 28
The summer season has started unleashing its adverse effects. Hundreds of residents have been in the grip of water-borne diseases in the town.

The Health Department, on its part, seems to be going on its ordinary pace in taking on the challenge, with the result that the number of patients of diseases like diarrhoea, vomiting, jaundice and cholera has started rising.

Although the phenomenon is related to the change of season, easy availability of food products kept in the open and the supply of contaminated water in some parts have led to the worsening situation.

It is true that the district administration had banned the sale of exposed food articles and fruit in the first week of March, but the subsequent action by the both Health Department and Municipal Corporation Faridabad had not matched the situation. There is no proper coordination and sharing of information between the department and the civic body and as a result, preventive measures have not been taken, say departmental sources.

The Health Department had reportedly taken two samples of water being supplied in the recent past. It is learnt that both the samples have failed the test. As per information, the district has about 85 ice factories and units making ice candies. The department is supposed to undertake regular checking of the water and the products made by these units. It is reported that about eight samples of ice candies have been lifted in the district in the present season, whose report is still awaited.

The sale of sugarcane juice in the open has added to the problem. About a dozen labourers who took such juice recently were down with diarrhoea in Ballabgarh town. As many as 12 persons with stomach disorders were admitted in the civil hospital here on Saturday. Several patients, including children, were already admitted in the civil hospital here. Reports of such patients getting treatment at private clinics have also come in. The SDM of Ballabgarh has ordered the removal of all the stalls selling cane juice and half-cut fruits in the open.

Putting posters on walls may land you in jail
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 28
Posters on the walls and by the side of roads are a blot on Delhi’s landscape. They should be removed and the walls should be whitewashed.

Urban Development Minister A K Walia’s instructions to the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Public Works Department (PWD) also include a directive to lodge First Information Reports (FIRs) against those whose posters or publicity materials are found to be put up on the roads and walls.

The directive was issued after the minister visited certain roads in Timarpur, Model Town, Azadpur vegetable market, Adarsh Nagar, Pitampura, Saraswati Vihar, Sainik Vihar and Shakurpur resettlement colony in north Delhi on Saturday.

The minister said that the West Bengal Prevention of Defacement of Property Act 1976 was in force in Delhi under which damage to property caused by any kind of publicity material shall invite a fine of up to Rs 1,000 or imprisonment up to six months or both.
