ROUND UP Chandigarh, April 28 The MoU provides for joint efforts of industry and the government for enhancing the quality of sports. Mr R.S. Lodha, president, FICCI on being asked as to what returns he expected from the sponsorships, he said the main objective was to help India attain good image worldwide in sports, but in the longer run, every achievement of an individual or a team carried an image also, so he expected the sportspersons to project that image. Mr Shekhar Dutt, DG, SAI said the FICCI would support various sportspersons under its different schemes such as SPDA, NSTC, SAG or so. He said the thrust was on the mobilisation of finances which were required to be passed on to sportspersons at this hour. Last year also, an agreement was signed between the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Indian Olympic Association to boost sports. Though inviting industry to spend on sports by offering them various incentives in the form of tax rebates may go a long way in promoting sports, yet our country needs long-term sponsors who can adopt any sports discipline vis-a-vis its growth potential. This will help grassroot-level sportspersons. The results will be visible only when senior sportspersons bring glory to the country at the international level with added incentives. The positive returns enjoyed by the sponsoring firm will then lure other related firms to come the aid of sportspersons by sparing its budget for the development of sports. |
