Busta XI bundled out for 437
St Lucia (Grenada), April 27 Captain Ridley Jacobs remained unbeaten on 55 from 63 balls with six fours and a six but the hosts who resumed at 401 for six at lunch could not survive beyond one hour. The second new ball, taken just before the lunch break, proved to be their undoing with Indian speedster Tinu Yohannan finishing with figures of three for 84 and Sanjay Bangar claiming two wickets for 92 runs. The spinners’ limited success notwithstanding, Indians’ misery spilled over to the second day with Busta XI reaching an imposing 401 for six at lunch in the three-day tour match here today. Harbhajan Singh claimed two wickets including that of centurion Wavell Hinds, who was out for a majestic 175, while Anil Kumble added one more to his overnight one success but there seemed no end to India’s plight. The batsmen scored at will and added 151 runs in the morning session for the loss of four wickets. At the crease were the two Test hopefuls skipper Ridley Jacobs, batting on 33, and Dinanath Ramnarine on 15. When play started this morning, Busta XI resumed at their overnight 250 for two with Renuka Morton joining Wavell Hinds after opener Devon Smith had been dismissed off what turned out to be the last ball of the opening day yesterday. Morton, who has played for West Indies in the one-day internationals, has the reputation of being an aggressive stroke-maker but the Leeward Islands batsman was ill at ease against Kumble who bowled unchanged almost throughout the session. Kumble, surprisingly left out of the second Test and now working to get back into the team, got the ball to nip back and bounce and troubled most batsmen. The champion leg-spinner made a spirited comeback after being taken for quite a few runs yesterday. Wavell Hinds, who resumed at his overnight 140, took time to find his bearings before getting back to the attacking mould. Executing his trademark shots with ease, he lofted off-spinner Sarandeep Singh for a straight six to reach his 150 and then swept the bowler for a four. He also cut Kumble for a boundary. Harbhajan Singh gave India the break in his first over of the day when he clean bowled Wavell Hinds while coming round the wicket. Wavell Hinds batted for 256 minutes and hit 23 fours and four sixes. West Indies lost their third wicket at 303. It signaled the arrival of the other Hinds-Ryan-at the crease but he could not emulate the success of Wavell Hinds. He hit a six off Harbhajan Singh but had made only 10 when he offered a return catch to Kumble while attempting to drive down the wicket. Nagamooto hurt in road mishap Georgetown, April 27 Mr Singh has already notified the Antigua-based West Indies Cricket Board (WICR) that Nagamootoo would not be available for the third Test match against India to be played in Barbados from next Tuesday. The accident occurred late on Thursday night when a mini-bus in which the cricketer was travelling ran off the road as it swerved to avoid a cow, causing him to sustain cuts to his face and bruises to other parts of the body. “He is conscious and I don’t think it’s that serious but then again you don’t know internal things (injuries). There are some cuts on his face which required about 15 stitches,” Mr Singh

Pak complete series sweep
Lahore, April 27 Malik, who replaced off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, struck 12 boundaries in a 142-ball 115—his personal best—to propel Pakistan to 278 for five from their 50 overs. The injury-stricken visitors were all out for 212 in 45.4 overs. For Malik, adjudged man-of-the-match, it was his second one-day century in 23 games. His first was against the West Indies (111 not out) in the second one-day international against the West Indies in February. It was also Pakistan's first clean sweep of a three-match series since 1996-97 when they blanked Zimbabwe. Overall, it was their fifth whitewash and second over New Zealand since 1990-91. Pakistan won the opener at Karachi by 153 runs and sealed the series in Rawalpindi where they won by three wickets. Yousuf Youhana chipped in with a useful 53 while debutant Misbahul Haq made 28 and Abdul Razzaq hit a punishing 22 off 11 balls. Afridi and Malik had put on a brisk 26 by the sixth over when Afridi miscued a pull off Adams and was caught at mid-on by Matthew Horne for 18. Malik found an able ally in Yousuf Youhana and both carried Pakistan past the 100 mark in the 20th over. Rajiv Nayyar deserves a better deal Chandigarh, April 27 During 1995 the doughty Rajiv, who hails from Chamba but plays for Una, scored three consecutive centuries in Ranji Trophy matches. For two successive years in 1998 and 1999 Rajiv was the second highest scorer from the North Zone. Rajiv scored 523 runs in five matches at a whopping 104.6 apiece in the recent edition of the championship. His moment of crowning glory came when in 1999 when he erased from the record books peerless Hanif Mohammed's 40-year-old record for longest stay at the wicket in first class cricket. Displaying exemplary concentration and technique he batted for 1017 minutes scoring 271 runs against Jammu and Kashmir in recording the feat. The legendary Pakistan opening batsman was famed for his impeccable technique. But all these efforts have failed to convince those at the helm of his value as a steady middle order batsman, who could be relied upon at the time of crisis. Rajiv has emerged saviour for Himachal umpteen times. Rajiv regretted that after having scored nearly 1000 runs in 1999 in eight matches (5 Ranji and 3 Duleep Trophy) he was not considered for selection against the visiting South Africa. Himachal Pradesh made their maiden entry to the knockout stage of the Ranji Trophy championship this season. Rajiv was up there with his unbeaten 102 in the second innings against Haryana, while in the first essay he remained unbeaten on 99. In 1999-2000 he was in good form and played a stellar role in North Zone winning the Duleep Trophy, scoring centuries against West Zone and South Zone and a valuable 88 against Central Zone. Rajiv regretted that despite being in ominous touch he got just one game in the next edition of the championship against Delhi where he was sent in to bat at No 7. Worse was in store for him this season when he was not selected for the Duleep Trophy altogether. His superb form in 1996 when he scored nearly 750 runs in seven matches fetched him a berth in Board Prasident's XI to play against South Africa. But as ill luck would have been Rajiv failed to capitalise on the chance. The same year he was selected for the Challenger Trophy but despite he being in superb nick he was not included in the playing XI. He again got a chance when he was selected for the Board President's XI to play against New Zealand in 1999 but again he was not included in the playing XI. Rajiv, training under former fast bowler Yograj Singh and Harish at the Sector 16 cricket stadium for a couple of years now, has to his credit nearly 6300 runs including 19 centuries and 30 fifties in the Ranji Trophy matches. Rajiv has been playing club cricket in England since 1993. Team selection in India has always been a subject of intense debate. Occasions when the team selections did not attract any adverse comments have been rare. There have been instances where most unlikely players have been inducted into the squad. Players have been dumped without a fair trial and there are those who have got much longer run than they deserved. The whole process concerning the selection of the Indian wicketkeeper after Nayan Mongia fell out of favour typifies the ills afflicting Indian cricket. After Mongia was shown the door virtually a lot of wicketkeepers like Saba Karim, M S K Prasad, Vijay Dahiya and Sameer Dighe were inducted into the Indian squad. Then suddenly West Bengal's Deep Dasgupta emerged from nowhere and was selected for the gruelling tour of South Africa. When Dasgupta was found inadequate as a wicketkeeper Haryana's Ajay Ratra was summoned for one-dayers against England before he was dumped again. Despite widespread criticism Dasgupta again found himself in the West Indies-bound squad. Despite all the talk of Ratra being the first-choice wicketkeeper it was Dasgupta who played the first Test ahead of Ratra. But again he was dropped paving the way for Ratra's Test debut in the second Test. If performance in domestic cricket is any yardstick for selection to the Indian squad there are very few players who can match the level of consistency achieved by Rajiv. If one goes by the amount of runs he has scored and if consistency is any barometer then Rajiv certainly deserves a better deal. Unnerved, Rajiv is set to leave for England on April 30 to play in highly competitive Birmingham league. |
Capriati axed from Fed Cup team
Charlotte (North Carolina), April 27 “The Federation Cup competition is comprised of team play, and our team’s rules apply to all players to ensure a team concept,” King said yesterday on the eve the Americans’ first-round match against Austria. “We are disappointed that Jennifer did not agree to comply with our closed, team-only practice policy, and as a result, (she) was excused from the team.” With the second-ranked Capriati out, the USA will forfeit today’s second singles match against Evelyn Fauth in the best-of-five series at Olde Providence Racquet Club. “I am extremely upset about being dismissed,” Capriati said in a statement released last night. “I was looking forward to representing my country in this prestigious international competition, and I had enthusiastically accepted the invitation from USTA to participate. I considered this a great honour. “I am so disappointed by the actions USTA has taken regarding my status, and it is important that I clarify the circumstances surrounding their decision. “It never occurred to me little-known policies that conflicted with my serious preparation for upcoming tour event would result in this ending.” She said she was preparing for some very important tournaments, including the defence of ‘my title at the French Open.’ “I do not believe I did anything to hurt the team. I obeyed the rules as I understood them, and fulfilled the obligations I had to the team. “It is amazing to me that I am being penalised so severely for simply wanting to prepare as best I can for the Federation Cup and my other commitments,” she said. Monica Seles will face Austria’s Barbara Schwartz in the singles opener today. In place of the forfeited match, American Lisa Raymond will play Daniela Kix in an eight-game proset exhibition. The Americans are trying to win their 18th title after withdrawing from the event last year in the wake of September 11. The US team did not attempt to win its third straight title last October, citing security concerns for opting not to travel to Madrid for the final following the terrorist attacks. The USA is the top seed in the event and heavily favoured to beat Austria even without Capriati. The winner will play the Czech Republic-Croatia winner in a second-round match from July 20 to 21. Austria will be without Barbara Schett, their top player, who opted not to play in the Federation Cup to concentrate on getting ready for next month’s French Open. AP |
Argentina favourites, feels Eriksson
London, April 27 Eriksson also said today he would pick Leeds United’s Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate after the World Cup finals. The players have been ignored since being involved in court cases over the assault of an Asian student. Cole (20) was outstanding in a 4-0 defeat of Paraguay this month while defender Wes Brown (22) and midfielder Owen Hargreaves (21) are also fighting for World Cup places alongside Michael Owen (22) and central defender Rio Ferdinand (23). “We will have one of the youngest teams, maybe even the youngest,” Eriksson was quoted in the Daily Mirror as telling a business lunch this week. “If the opening game was tomorrow I would definitely know my starting 11, although of course it depends on fitness and injuries.” England meet Argentina, Sweden and Nigeria in the first round at the finals in Japan and South Korea, starting on May 31. “I would say Argentina would be my favourites along with France and maybe Italy but as dark horses why not us?” “I know it’s going to be very difficult but it costs nothing to dream. Midfielder Bowyer was cleared of assault charges in December but Woodgate was found guilty of affray and sentenced to 100 hours of community service. The defender suffered a broken jaw this month and will miss the rest of the season. Reuters |
Scolari yet to choose goalie
Rio de Janeiro, April 27 Scolari has to choose three goalies from a list of four: Marcos, Dida, Rogerio Ceni and Julio Cesar. “I have until May 6 to decide,” he said. Marcos, of Palmeiras, has started in recent games and is widely thought to be Scolari’s first choice. Corinthians goalie Dida, a veteran of the 1998 World Cup, is an expert at defending penalty kicks and could challenge Marcos for the starting spot. Rogerio Ceni, of Sao Paulo, holds an edge for the final spot over Flamengo’s Julio Cesar, a young revelation, who likely will be “saved” for the future. Worried about measles Brazil hopes to return from South Korea and Japan with the World Cup, but the government is worried that Brazilians will bring something else back: measles. The National Health Foundation said it would ask for permission to vaccinate the Brazilian players before they leave for South Korea next month. Brazil is in group C, based in Ulsan, during the opening round of the tournament. Dr Maria Maia, head of foundation’s immunisation programme, said Brazil had not registered any cases of measles since December 2000 but that the disease still exists in Japan and South Korea. “Vaccination is important to prevent the reintroduction of the disease,” Maia said. The government also is urging tourists and journalists to get vaccinated before they travel. Who will be captain? Who will take Dunga’s place as Brazilian captain at the World Cup? The team’s field general in 1994 and 1998 suggests two names: Emerson and Roberto Carlos. Now retired, Dunga cited a recent episode when World Cup veterans Emerson and Roberto Carlos called the press to publicly defend coach Luiz Felipe Scolari after he came under fire for the team’s poor play. “That shows there is leadership on the team,” Dunga said in an interview with Pele’s web site, www.pele.net. “Little by little, these players will be the new leaders of the national team.” Execrated at home after Brazil’s elimination from the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Dunga was held up as a symbol of a crude style of play that favoured strength over skill. Brazilians disdainfully referred to the period as “the Dunga era.” But Dunga returned in triumph to command Brazil’s conquest of their fourth World Cup title in 1994, when he pushed, bullied and bossed stars like Bebeto and Romario. He was back four years later when Brazil were runners-up to France. AP |
Azad apprises Bharti
of awardees’ issues Chandigarh, April 27 Now Azad has now highlighted certain points relating to Dronacharya awardees. He said it were coaches who produce players who finally become eligible for the Arjuna awards over a period of time. Azad said hardly there were 30 coaches, who had got Dronacharya awards till date. Azad, also the president of the Dronacharya Awardees Forum, has also demanded certain perks from the Government of India for Dronacharya awardees He said they were however thankful to the Ministry of Railways for allowing rail concession to them, but regretted that no concession had been granted for air travel. Azad said a few months ago, the Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Shahnawaz Khan, had doled out concession to sportspersons and Arjuna awardees but these were not given to Dronacharya awardees. He said whenever any out-of-turn allotment say for filling station, gas agency, etc are given the eligibility criteria do not mention Dronacharya awardees whereas it includes sportspersons and Arjuna awardee. Azad had also raised the issue concerning pensionary benefits as given to former Olympians and Asian Games and Commonwealth medallists. |

New Delhi, April 27 As per the information received here, Atwal, who dropped five strokes in the last three holes on the first day, added a two-over 74 to his first round six-over 78. That left him tied for the 132nd place at eight-over 152. The cut was applied at two-over 146 and 85 players made it to the final two rounds. Spanish superstar Sergio Garcia led the tournament at nine-under 135, while Greg Owen of England was one stroke behind at eight-under 136. Meanwhile, in the $-525,000 BMW Charity Pro-Am, the second event of the 2002 season of the Buy.com Tour in the USA, Daniel Chopra of Sweden, who honed his skills in India, failed to capitalise on a solid start and missed the cut after shooting a four-over 76 in the second round.
