‘Trauma
— a modern day killer disease’ Chandigarh, April 27 While delivering his inaugural speech, General Jacob said academic meetings could be helpful in achieving and maintaining high standards of surgical education. “Trauma and disaster management has become one of the major components in the present day health care delivery system. Trauma is one of the modern days’ killer disease”, he added. Showing concern that trauma and disaster as a “killing disease” has not received proper importance, General Jacob said in spite of wide roads, number of accidents and deaths resulting from these are still significant in the city. He attributed the accidents and deaths to reckless and careless driving. Urbanisation, industrialisation and modernisation have resulted in making trauma a modern day killer disease, General Jacob said and added that associated disability, lost wages, medical expenses, insurance premium, property damage and employment loss are some of the direct and indirect results of the trauma and disaster. Taking optimistic note, General Jacob stated that the true cost of society could be measured by realising that trauma and disaster strike down its young and potentially most productive members. The chief guest also called upon the participating delegates from of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to take initiative to train paramedical staff to take care of trauma-related injuries and deaths on highways. He also stressed on the need to deploy ambulances on highways and asked the delegates to take up the matter with their representative state governments. Earlier, General Jacob was welcomed by Dr S.M. Bose of the Department of Surgery, PGIMER. Dr Bose in his welcome address said about 10 lakh people die of trauma-related injury or disease every year and trauma-related deaths are increasing by 4 percent annually. |

Civic body to move SC on garbage dumping issue SAS Nagar, April 27 Against an expenditure of around Rs nine lakh likely to be incurred in the removal of garbage, the civic body yesterday decided to challenge the High Court decision in the Apex Court. An expenditure of around Rs 50,000 is expected to be incurred in filing the SLP, said the president of the civic body, while attending the general house meeting. He said in light of the tight financial position, it was not possible for the civic body to remove the garbage within a period of 15 days. A councillor of the opposition group, Mr Manjeet Singh Sethi, objected to the choice of the advocates on the panel of the civic body. A number of councillors sought a special drive to check phase-wise condition of storm water gullies and sewerage. It was noticed that during yesterday’s short spell of rain, storm water gullies in different markets had been found blocked. The civic body approved an agenda item seeking an increase in the monthly salary of the municipal councillors from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. Once approved, the revised salary would be paid from January this year. Another agenda item of paying the monthly telephone bills up to an amount of Rs 1,000 per month was also approved by the house. The civic body did not approve the issue of allowing the maintenance of private bus queue shelters and public toilets privately. The shortlisted private company was to be given sovereign rights of advertising at a particular slot for a specific period. The final decision would, however, be subject to the guidelines of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, regarding allowing advertisements along roads. The issue of inviting private parties for maintaining five roundabouts in the township was also granted sanction. Of the 22 agenda items only one item kept pending. |
