Our Sports Reporter

Punjab and Sind Bank chairman and managing director N S Gujral with the newly-inducted players into the bank’s Sub-Junior Hockey Academy.

New Delhi, April 19
The Punjab and Sind Bank launched the first-ever Sub-Junior Hockey Academy in Jalandhar. The purpose of the academy is to nurture budding talent at the grass-root level to give a new thrust to Indian hockey.

Punjab and Sind Bank has been playing a pivotal role in the promotion of hockey in the country as many leading national and international players are the products of the Bank.

Chairman and managing director of Punjab and Sind Bank N S Gujral said the bank had established its first hockey academy at Jalandhar in 1994 to groom players in the 15 to 18 age group.

He said the setting up of the sub-junior academy was a step forward in the direction of moulding talent in the 12 to 15 years age group.

Mr Gujral said the 20 players selected for the academy would be given intensive training and all the expenses for their boarding, lodging, training and schooling will be met by the bank. Renowned hockey players will be in charge of the academy.

Mr Gujral said selection trials to pick players for the Sub-Junior Academy were held at Shahbad Markanda, Faridkot and Jalandhar. The trials evoked overwhelming response. The selection committee comprised former Olympians Ajitpal Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, Gundeep Kumar, Ripudaman Kumar Singh, Rajinder Singh and Charanjit Singh.

Mr Gujral said the Bank’s efforts have produced rich dividends as so far, the Bank has contributed 25 international players, including Olympians, to the country.

Since the Punjab and Sind Bank is directly affiliated to the Indian Hockey Federation, the sub-junior team will be able to participate in national hockey tournaments without any hitch to give the players a lot of match experience to hone up their skills.
