15-kg tumour removed from abdomen
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, April 19
In Christian Medical College and Hospital here, a 15-kg tumour was removed from the abdomen of a 55- year-old man, Ajit Ram of Noor Mahal, who had been admitted early this month with complaints of persistent fever, pus discharge from an abdominal wound, weight loss and inability to walk.

It all started five years ago when Ajit Ram developed swelling in left part of the abdomen which gradually spread to the whole of the abdomen, making it difficult for him to walk. He was shown to a local doctor, who referred him to Civil Hospital of Jalandhar, where a laparotomy was performed on him last year. Ten days after the operation, he developed a wound infection that healed leaving only a small area that continued to discharge pus. Weight loss began with it. The patient has not been able to earn his livelihood as a vegetable vendor because of his inability to walk after the first surgery.

Dr Sunil K. Singh and Dr Philip Alexander, surgeons of the CMCH said. “The patient was diagnosed with an extremely large abdominal tumour arising from the left, occupying the entire abdominal activity and pushing the abdominal organs to one side. Laparotomy had to be performed immediately.”
