St Stephen’s old students to hold cooking contest

Chandigarh, April 6
To celebrate the completion of 20 years of St Stephen’s School, Chandigarh, The Old Students Society (TOSS) will hold a cooking competition during school hours on April 12.

The contest will be held in three categories — vegetarian, non-vegetarian and desserts — and will be open to contestants of all ages with a participation fees of Rs 100 per dish. Ghazal wins crown

Students of the Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Tangori, organised a cultural function to welcome the students of the 2001 batch at Kisan Bhavan, here this evening.

It was largely attended by staff and students of the college. The Chairman of the managing committee of the college, Mr J.S. Sidhu, applauded the performances. The main attraction of the evening was the Mr and Miss 2001 contest, which was won by Kanwarjit Singh and Ghazal Sandhu, respectively. Miss and Mr Charming was bagged by Abhijot and Samanjit Singh, while Miss and Mr Personality was won by Anjumpreet and Jagmeet Singh.

61 lakh awarded in accident cases

Going by the figures, the permanent Lok Adalat held at the Sector 17 District Courts today was a success. A whopping sum of Rs 61.81 lakh was awarded as compensation in accident cases. This is not all. For violation of the Shop Act and the Motor Vehicle Rules, the violators paid Rs 95,350.

The adalat, held for expeditious disposal of cases, was organised under the supervision Mr Justice N.K. Sodhi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In all, 16 benches settled cases pertaining to matrimonial and other civil disputes, accidents, criminal compoundable offences, besides other cases pertaining to the violation of the Shops Act and the traffic rules.

According to the District and Sessions Judge, Mr H. S. Bhalla, 38 of the 294 accident cases were settled. Giving details, he revealed that 122 of the 290 civil cases were also settled. Regarding compoundable criminal cases, the Judge claimed that 123 of the 203 cases were settled. Besides this, 1,171 of the 1,432 summary cases were also settled.

He added that out of the compensation for accident cases awarded, more than Rs 26 lakh was awarded by the court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr J.S. Klar. Out of 1,171 summary cases, 690 were disposed of by the court of the UT Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr C.L. Mohal.

Australia’s all-girl band visiting India

Bardot, Australia’s largest selling all-girl quartet band, consisting of Sally Polihronas, Sophie Monk, Tiffany Wood, and Belinda Chapple, will be visiting India from April 8 to 13 to celebrate the launch of their Indian debut, “Play It Like That”.

It is Bardot’s second album globally, following their self-titled first.

Mumbai is the city that is going to be lucky to witness Bardot’s impressive looks, their even more impressive music and their live-wire performances. In fact, Bardot would be looking forward to visiting other Indian cities too, at a later day, when their album turns out to be as much of a hit in India as in the rest of the world.

Mann regales audience

Punjabi pop singer Harbhajan Mann had the fans singing to his tunes by presenting three hits from his different albums at a cultural function organised by Ruh Punjab Di, a local cultural club, to mark the second Baisakhi Mela at Ramlila Ground here this evening.

He was mobbed by a number of enthusiastic admirers amid beating of drums. Mr Mann performing Mirza, Gallan gorian... and Hai meri billo ... and the audience loved every moment of the programme.

Some of the fans jumped on to the stage to get photographed with the singer and for autographs. The police had to intervene to control the frenzied fans of the singer.

Paramjit Nabha, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Baljinder Dhillon, Dilwar Jawaharpura, Gurmeet Guri, Harjinder, Rubbi, Jaipal Dalli, Sarabjit Sukhi, Geetu Geetanjali and some other renowned singers also performed on the occasion.

Singing contest for children

Chandigarh, April 6
Yaadgar-e-Rafi Society will hold a singing competition for children (boys and girls) on May 4 at DAV College mini auditorium here.

Earlier, the society has been organising the competition for the Rafi Award, but this year, the society has extended the contest to children between the age of 12 and 17. There will be three trophies for the three best singers and these will be given away by a film personality in the society’s annual feature Rafi Nite to be held in November this year.
