Chandigarh, March 30
Chandigarh and neighbouring states are planning to follow the Kerala pattern and promote health tourism in a big way. The focus will be on non-resident Indians and executives who go to Kerala for ayurvedic cures and therapies.

North India’s first seminar in this regard ‘Indian Systems of Medicines and Health Tourism’ will be held on Sunday at Hotel Shivalik View. The objective of the seminar will be to promote Indian system of medicines (ISM) and synergise it with the promotion of health tourism in the northern states. It will deliberate on various misconceptions about the efficacy and curative powers of ayurveda and other systems of medicines, said the Joint Secretary, Health, UT Administration, Mr Vivek Atray, here today.

The objectives of tourism development are to foster understanding among people, create employment opportunities and bring about socio-economic benefits to the community, particularly in interior and remote areas and to strive towards balanced and sustainable development, and promote India’s cultural heritage, said Mr Atray.

The unique geographical location of Chandigarh with its infrastructural facilities, serene, scenic environs and nature trails have the potential to be developed as health tourism destination of North India, the General Manager of CITCO, Mr A.K. Malhotra, said.

Eminent ayurvedic, homoeopathic and Unani practitioners and officials of the participating State Governments are to speak on various aspects of ayurveda, other systems of medicine and health tourism and would further offer suggestions for promoting health tourism in this region.

The seminar will be organised by the Department of Tourism, UT Administration, the Chandigarh Industrial Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO) and the Institute of Tourism and Future Management Trends (ITFT). It has been named AROGYA 2002 and will be under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Health.

The Arogya 2002 will also feature an exhibition in which a number of drugs and medicines manufacturers will display their products, medicinal plants and herbs. Tourism stalls for providing information on places of tourist interest and the facilities available for the tourists will also be one of the attractions of the Expo.

Besides participation by the Union Ministry of Health, its four research councils will organise free health check-up and distribute medicines and publicity materials, including display and sale of publications. Free consultation for general public will also be organised by eminent practitioners.

The recommendations of the seminar will be sent to the Union Ministries of Health and Tourism for making AROGYA an annual event in Chandigarh.
