Civil hospital gasps for breath
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, March 27
The medical and healthcare facilities in Faridabad, which is not only an important industrial hub in north India but also has the largest population in the state, are proving to be grossly inadequate.

While the population has grown several times in the past few decades, the standard of medical facilities provided by the government have “failed” to improve.

With the national Highway No 2, which is one of the busiest roads in the region, passing through the district, there is no dearth of accidents. And the number of accidents has gone up considerably and the rate of deaths in these accidents has been one of the highest in Haryana. Despite these hard realities, the region has no trauma centre and a large number of critically injured persons are being referred to hospitals in Delhi.

The 200-bed Bhadshah Khan Civil Hospital, which is the biggest medical centre here, seems to be “sick” itself.

Emergency services at the centre are grossly inadequate and a majority of serious patients are being referred to Delhi hospitals. The hospital is facing shortage in the number of doctors and other staff. Although there are 18 physicians on the job at present, only 10 or 12 are available on any given day. Many of them have to attend medico-legal (court) cases most of the days and are being assigned duties during VIP visits.

The hospital has no child specialist for the past over five months. The OPD attends about 400 patients daily, but each of the departments has only one physician on duty on any day and on many occasions, the patients are told to come again due to the shortage of staff.

At least three doctors were on “VIP” duty, which has become a daily affair, stated an employee of the hospital. He said the hospital not only needed modern equipment, but also required services of at least 35 to 40 doctors on a permanent basis.

The X-ray and other test facilities in the hospital were available only up to a limited period each day and several patients had to get their tests and X-rays done from private labs, said an attendant of a patient.

The newly built post-mortem ‘house’ has been lying unused for about one-and-a-half years and is still awaiting a formal inauguration. A paediatrician of the civil hospital was suspended about five months ago and child patients are forced to go to private clinics, whose charges are heavy and sometimes unaffordable for poor people. The ‘Burn Ward’ here was provided with an AC an year ago, but patients of serious burns are being sent to Delhi normally.

In view of such conditions, private hospitals and clinics have mushroomed in the town and district over the past couple of decades.

The patients and their attendants who are well off avoid the civil hospital and mostly rely on private hospitals.

It is believed that while the latest medical facilities and trained doctors are available with private hospitals, the attitude and treatment at the government hospitals are unacceptable.

Although a demand has been raised by certain quarters to set up a state-of-the-art medical college and hospital with a full-fledged trauma unit in the region, the lack of political support has kept the decision to this effect at bay.

Special drive by traffic cops on Holi
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 27
The Delhi Traffic Police have issued a severe warning to hooligans and those who try to misbehave under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicants on the occasion of Holi on Friday.

The traffic cops will conduct a special checking drive to ensure safety and peace in traffic in the city on Holi. Over-speeding, drunken driving, triple riding, driving without helmets and other traffic violation will come under severe scrutiny, according to the traffic police.

“The public are advised to celebrate the festival keeping in mind their own safety and the safety of others. The co-operation of public is solicited to ensure Holi a happy and safe festival,” said a traffic police release.

The rapid growth of number of vehicles over the past two years in the city has become a great concern for the traffic police. This had resulted in parking problems, traffic snarls, environmental degradation and road accidents.

The cops have also warned those who park their vehicles at unauthorised places other than the spaces provided by the Delhi Traffic Police and civic agencies for parking purpose.

The lack of discipline and unauthorised parking of autos have also caused problems for the police as during the year 2001, 30,203 autorickshaws were prosecuted for obstructive and unauthorised parking on roads and this year, 5,337 such vehicles were being prosecuted till now, according to the statistics.
