Since the militancy has spread to the whole of the Jammu region, the Mata Vaishno Devi yatra has been affected. Owing to pressure of the security forces in the valley, the militants shifted to Jammu and intensified their activities in the Jammu region. A few months back the militants opened fire on passengers at Jammu railway station and several persons were killed in the firing. The militants have of late attacked those moving on the national highway.

The Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has reviewed the security measures and asked the government to strengthen them.

On the demand of the devotees, the board opened the traditional cave and devotees can go to Vaishno Devi shrine through the cave. The board has also taken up several developmental works for providing more facilities to pilgrims. Work on Shankaracharya Temple, about 2 km from Katra, has been started and is likely to be completed within six months. As security arrangements have been augmented by the state government as well as the shrine board, therefore a large number of pilgrims are expected to visit the shrine and Shankaracharya Temple on its completion.

The tourism industry has been adversely affected due to a rise in militant activities in this district. Militants have exploded bombs even on the national highway, thereby keeping tourists away. After reviewing the situation the government imposed the Disturbed Areas Act in the Jammu region. Tourists visit Patnitop and Gool Gulabgarh to see snow. They have hesitated to visit these places due to militancy. No development work is being carried out made by the government at these tourist spots. Hotels, restaurants and shops at these places are on the brink of collapse in the absence of tourists.
