Treat eye infections judiciously: docs
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 24
Using home remedies in case of eye infections might aggravate the problem instead of curing it. People of developing countries like ours are more prone to eye infections and they should get the treatment under proper supervision , said Dr S.P.S. Grewal, Founder and Head, Grewal Eye Institute, while addressing a press conference here today.

Grewal Eye Institute today conducted a symposium for practising ophthalmologists on the latest technological and medical advancements in the field of ocular infections.

Experts discussed magnitude of problem of ocular infections, post-operative ocular infections, infections following glaucoma filtration surgery, hypopyon corneal ulcer, role of laboratory diagnosis in Chlamydial, viral and fungal ocular infections, bacterial ocular infections and current standards in laboratory diagnosis, hospital infection control and medico-legal aspects. The operating theatre management and strategies to control surgery related infections were also highlighted.

Dr Grewal said usage of products like contact lens, glares etc was necessary as per the instructions. “Contact lens, for instance, if not cleaned regularly or used even after the expiry can cause serious problems. Similarly, glares have to be of good quality with features like proper transmission of light and UV rays protection”, he said.

Around 250 ophthalmologists from the region participated in the symposium. The specialists emphasised that all kinds of eye infections are emergencies and should be dealt with expeditiously.

Dr Amod Gupta, PGIMER, who presided over the morning session highlighted the problems that can occur due to eye infections. He talked about morbidity and blindness due to ocular infections. He outlined the management of Endopthalmitis.

Dr M.R. Dogra (PGIMER), who presided over the afternoon session, talked about the treatment of Endopthalmitis. The problem of ulcer of the cornea (clear watch glass in front of the eye), which has become very common, was discussed by Dr Ashok Sharma and Dr Ritu Arora.

Dr Jagat Ram spoke on finer details and requirements of an operating theatre and emphasised on the role of proper sterilisation techniques in preventing surgery related infection. Dr Biswas spoke of antibiotics and principles of their use. He cautioned against injudicious shotgun use of antibiotics.
