A cultural extravaganza at Jamia Millia
If you are looking for an evening of enjoyable and relaxed cultural extravaganza in the national Capital, the cultural functions held at Jamia Millia Islamia should be your obvious destination. The line-up of events during its recently held ‘Enigma’, was an overwhelming success. It attracted huge participation from all over the country. Though the function was mainly traditional in nature, it had some spectacularly colourful event. The students of the GP Girls Hostel of Jamia Millia Islamia celebrated their annual function on March 19. The function was not a showy extravaganza. It was a simple affair. The decoration was done with rangoli, candles and diyas left over from last Diwali, kites, cartoon and flowers. Colourful dupattas were used for decorating the make-shift stage, the entrance, the walls, trees and the pillars. The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, Syed Shahid Mahdi, was a relaxed member of the audience till its very end at 10 pm. The various programmes had an aura of Indian tradition and culture. For example, the theme for its ‘chitrahaar-cum-parody’ presentation was ‘old is gold’, in which various songs from good old movies were presented. ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’ from Muhgal-e-Azam, ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’, ‘Parda Hai Parada’ from Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin and ‘Ye Kya Jagah Hai Doston’ from Umrao Jaan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s ‘Aafreen Aafreen’ were some of the popular numbers. There were indeed some naughty acts that the seniors took in their stride. As during the qawwali `Parada Hai Parada’, a girl dressed in typical Rishi Kapoor style (as shown in the film) gave lip movement to ‘…Kisi Haseen Ki Taraf Ye Gulab Phenkunga’ and threw a red rose towards the Vice-Chancellor’s wife. It was a perfect throw. The rose fell right on her lap. She reciprocated fondly—picked it up and kissed it— much to the amusement of her hubby and the entertainer! ! The number `Mitva’ from the film Lagaan was enacted by a group of eight students. Then there were traditional solo dances from the North–East states of Assam (Bihu), Mizoram and Nagaland. The Vice-Chancellor was particularly moved by the fashion show of traditional Indian attires—-Mizoram and Manipur in their colourful best, ghaghra, lehenga choli, saaris, lachas and a lot more. Spellbound by the perfect presentation and beauty-enhancing ethnic wears, he even forgot to clap.. “The fashion show was wonderful. I liked it best,” said an overwhelmed Vice-Chancellor at the conclusion of the function. He described the girl students as “guiding forces of future” because of their “compassionate” nature and “humanistic approach towards life.” Even in the midst of their examinations, students were able to find time to celebrate the day and make it a “memorable event” for the 40-odd distinguished guests from the university. Spread over 3 hours, the function was followed by a prize distribution and a sumptuous dinner. Rana A. Siddiqui |
